in 10.7 and above Mac Lion hides the ~/Library folder (which contains the profile folder > which contains bookmarks in the places.sqlite file), see : Show hidden files and folders in 10.7 and above Mac .

Thanks for your reply. People at work think I'm mad trying to recover these bookmarks but I think they are. Maybe I use the internet differently to them. It's a 2008 Macbook Pro which I had Mountain Lion on.

It is hidden also in Mountain Lion, check the link in my first reply (Show hidden files and folders in 10.7 and above Mac) if you have access to find the profile folder.

Just tried that but when I hold down Option and click on Go, the library it gives me access to is the one owned by the working Desktop Mac and not the one on the hard drive from the MBP.

chflags nohidden ~/Library/

cd ~/Library

open ~/Library/

any luck ?

probably the same with my previous reply, you need command for the specific location

Cheers Ideato. I'm going to try using Terminal to find the sqlist etc. If that goes wrong I'll have successfully killed all my computers. In the event that I do, thank you for your help, it's been emotional!

Terminal has found an old signons.sqlite file on the old hard drive but it's directory address can't be accessed as it still shows as being through Application Support in a Profile folder, which I can't see. When I go through the Users/Fred directory, there is no Library to be looked into yet Terminal has shown that as being the location of the signons file! What the deuce is going on?!?

signons.sqlite file (and key3.db file) is passwords related files, see Your important data and their files

Thanks for all your help yesterday Ideato. I used Terminal to find the files even though Finder couldn't locate them and I couldn't access them using Go and the Option key. I was going to follow this video http://macmost.com/using-terminal-to-copy-files.html and use the Terminal to copy the files to a USB stick so I could transfer them but for some reason, this morning, I decided to see if I could repair disk when the hard drive was attached via a dock to my Mac Pro. Well, who'd a thunk it?!? It allowed the repair to complete. I put the hard drive back in my laptop and was able, albeit slowly to go through Application Support and copy the Profile folder! No idea why the repair didn't work when I tried it from a USB drive but one resource mentioned that even though the OS is only 4.4Gb, you actually need more than 8Gb of space available in order for the repair and installation to work. I only had an 8Gb stick at my disposal! Anyway, all better now, doing a long erase and I've learnt loads about Terminal. Result, ish! Have a good weekend!
