Not only does Flash crash (every version since v9), but Microsoft Silverlight hangs the plugin container as well. Something's clearly not right with the design of this.

You mean like this? Plugincontainer doesn't actually crash it just uses 99% of CPU.

Hi dlandiss, based on the latest crash data, I recommend disabling the Flash Player plugin's protected mode. See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox? Note the specific folder path for 32-bit vs. 64-bit Windows (both folders exist on 64-bit Windows, but Firefox only uses the Flash plugin in the SysWOW64 path).

Thank you, jscher. I have done that and will keep watching.

Hi Dan, your latest crash unfortunately has incomplete data so I'm not able to interpret it ("no crashing thread identified; corrupt dump"). While I hope you don't have more crashes, please do post the next ID you get if it has more information.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

It just won't quit. There have been several crashes that are not logged here -- at least 4 in the past 2 days. Often there is also a warning that a script stopped running.

Hi dlandiss, is Oct. 5th your latest? In looking at some other crash reports that have the same signature on Firefox 24+Windows 7, one frequent commonality is the Skype extension. Could you try disabling it and see whether that makes any difference? You can do that on the Add-ons page here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > in the left column click Extensions

You may want to disable other extensions you don't mind living without for 48 hours to see whether you have a problem running just the essential ones.

more options

October 5 is only the most recent crash that was recorded. FF has crashed at least 4 times in the past 2 days.

I have now disabled The Skype extension, and all plug-ins except Java and Flash. Unfortunately Flash freezes often and I get the "Shockwave Flash stopped running" error message.

Thank you for your help, I hope we can narrow down the possible causes.

more options

Does it help if you set the Flash and Java plugin to "Ask to activate" to prevent them from starting automatically?

more options

Unfortunately that choice does not seem to be available for the Flash and Java plugins -- just "always activate" or "never activate."

Thanks---

dyvik1001, on September 10 (a few messages above in this thread) I was advised to turn that off, so I did. I found no difference in crash rate.

Thank you.

Hi Dan, before you get that third choice, you need to change a preference in the about:config preference editor.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box that appears above the list, type or paste click and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the plugins.click_to_play preference to switch it from false to true
