Installing firefox 17.0.1 fails on mac 10.6

After downloading firefox 17.0.1, the install fails with a message that libsmime3.dylib is already in use. The install also complains that the file is already in the applications folder although I've removed it. The mac software is all up-to-date. Any work-around? Thanks.
