I downloaded firefox 5 onto my PC running Vista and kept being asked to restart my PC to complete.I have tried uninstalling but this also fails with a similar message to restart to complete a previous upgrade. How do I fix ?

I downloaded firefox 5 onto my PC running Vista and kept being asked to restart my PC to complete. I have tried uninstalling but this also fails with a similar message to restart to complete a previous upgrade. Tried downloading Firefox 3.18 and get above message. So no Firefox. Note I have restarted many times all to no avail. The restart appears to fail to complete the installation and I am unable to make any progress even to remove the new version .
