i get the same software error when starting firefox or thunderbirdand cant update either program

THe error says "the update could not be installed. Please make sure no other copies of firefox are running on your computer and then restart firefox to try again." I can then hit ok and Firefox will start, but without applying the upgrade. The same thing is happening on T-Bird. Firefox is 3.6.12 attempting to load 3.6.13 and T-bird is 3.1.6 attempting to load 3.1.7. I am running w7 home x64 on a homebuilt pc with AMD quadcore and 5gb memory.
