My links!
I was trying to solve a hanging issue with firefox and following a 'tip' I changed the name of places.sq.lite to places.sq.lite.old I figured the renamed file would be there to back-up from if something went wrong and although the hanging issue seems to have been fixed I have lost hundreds of links that have taken ages to put together.
Where is sq.lite.old located as it is missing from the original folder? It is not in my recycle bin so renaming it to old hasn't simply deleted it. In another folder there are bookmark backups with dates (JSONLZ4 files) but I have no idea how to get my old links back from them, if indeed that is what they are for.
Please help.

If you go to Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks and click Import and Backup -> Restore does it list any items there you can restore from? It pulls these from the files you found in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Thanks Mark but no. Though it should have? Clicking any of the previous entries (there's a handful from the last 3 months) says '12 entries' or up to 16 but there's probably hundreds of missing links. I really don't get why they're not there. Firefox is acting so strangely. None of the add-ons I've reinstalled are working but one problem at a time I guess.
I'm hoping the places.sq.lite file I renamed has my old data, wherever its been shunted to.
You may be looking in the wrong place. The file is places.sqlite.
places.sqlite, right. Still, its in alphabetical order so that's no help. places.sqlite.old is the original and its not there.
OK so I found it, for some reason it had been moved to the other profiles folder 'gomkcban.default' I got rid of the new places.sqlite file and replaced it with the old one.
No change. Looks like my links are gone for good. Thanks, firefox.

cor-el - I love you. Yes, I brought up the about:profiles page and the top profile when I opened it had all the links I was certain were gone forever. Thank you so much.
