Supposed update removed all bookmarks

I've been using Firefox on a new laptop for a few days now. I didn't have an account yet, added bookmarks and all that stuff.

Today I out of nowhere got the notification that "Firefox got updated in the background. Please restart the browser to continue". I closed Firefox, tried to reopen it and get a message saying "You are trying to start an older version of Firefox. In order to protect your data, please sign in with a new account." (All messages freely transcripted as I didn't screenshot them).

So here I am, browser reset, bookmarks gone and I have no idea what actually happened. I now created an account in order to at least save my bookmarks to the cloud and prevent such unnecessary loss in the future, nevertheless I'd like to know why this happened and if/how this can be prevented?

Did Mozilla withdraw the update to version 94?

Hi, you need to update to Firefox 94 or 94.0.1 to run that last profile. See: How to download and install Firefox on Mac

Now just a few minutes after setting it up again I got a message that Firefox needs to be updated to v94.

Hmm, not sure why Firefox downgraded, but that creates a new profile folder. The old one should still be available. Once you are running the current release, try this:

Profile Manager Page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least one profile and could list many. (Each profile has two folders and one or more buttons. Do not use any Remove buttons!)

The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Do you have any other profile(s) listed on this page? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

If it isn't what you want, simply close that new window.

If it IS what you want, back on the about:profiles page, click the Set as default profile button for that profile so Firefox uses it automatically at the next startup.

Can you get back to where you were?

Today I tried out the steps you proposed. I have three profiles listed in about:profiles.

a) "default-release-1", the currently active new one, which is empty

b) "default", which is empty as well

c) "default-release", which when I try to activate displays the attached error message.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to circumnavigate this error. I can only quit – which simply closes the error message – or create a new profile.
