Problems with profiles after Windows 10 reload

more options

A week ago, a bad update download trashed Windows 10. I had the operating system reloaded but have been unable to recover my Firefox profiles. (Nor my Thunderbird profiles either.) I downloaded the older profiles from my Carbonite account, but even tho they are in the Profiles directory, the Firefox profiles manager does not recognize them (i.e. they don't show up in the listing of profiles.) It's really frustrating since I need my bookmarks for work. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Chosen solution

Its a little boggling as to what is or has occurred on your system. But i am sure that FireFox is the symptom and not the cause of your issues.

There is a trick you might try but there is no gaurantee it will work.

Go into the about profiles again.

While there, create a new virgin profile.

Then rename that profile to something like "ProfileTest" but any name that is recognizable will work.

This profile will be experimental and deletable if it proves unhelpful

Next take note of the directories that are created for this new profile.

Next close FF and open Windows File manager and try to copy over the old files you have found into the new profile, keepng in mind to maintain continuity with replacing the newly created files and or folders with the older ones.

And if by chance you think you took a misstep in the above. Then delete the test profile and start over.

In you enter the code in bold below into the url field then press enter, you may find a list of profiles that are on your system.

about:profiles

If you are able to invoke an former profile and it has your user data, let us know then we will provide you with ar methodology to backup your FF user data.

Thanks for the tip but the problem is that I've done that and the old profiles do not show up in the about:profiles window so I am unable to access them.

Thanks - that solution seems to have worked. I don't know why the reloaded profiles didn't show up, but Creating a test profile and copying the contents of the saved profile into it seemed to do the trick. (Now to see if I can pull the same trick on Thunderbird...)
