Enable/disable automatic redirect.

So I was having some trouble a few days ago with a website that automatically re-directed as soon as I landed on it to another page. So I happily went off in the settings and disable the automatic redirect. Now a week or two later I'm sitting here going I can't find the setting anymore? I can't even search for it and have absolutely no results you would think searching for "redirect" in the settings pain would bring it up. it's probably something that got buried in developer tools that I would never be able to turn off/toggle again unless I get lucky with the right extremely memorable and easily accessible incantation in the about : config because that's just all so well documented. Is it a "1" is it a "0" is it a "5" which one disabled / enabled what is the other options do?

Chosen solution

In Firefox 56+ the "Warn me when website try to redirect or reload the page" setting can no longer be found in Options/Preferences.

You can modify this pref on the about:config page to disable this accessibility feature.

  • accessibility.blockautorefresh = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can click the button to "Accept the Risk and Continue".

Oh yeah and why do I have to have a text file list of all the things I have to toggle in the about:config that used to be a nice accessible setting. I guess it's still better than chrome, the last updated UI design was nice. Better yet why bother having settings/Preferences at all, just do away with the whole menu and make everybody go to the about:config menu.

This is sort of off-topic, but I suggest bookmarking the pages for any tech tips you adopt so you can track those things down later.

Thanks I'm not sure how it got turned on then because I know I went into preferences and toggled it, maybe it synced from another older browser?

I have a text file with all the about:config fixes that need to be changed on installing a new system, I just haven't gotten to it on the new system. half the time I bookmark something I have to go into the web archive when I eventually find the bookmark I'm looking for. There used to be some really nice pages that had nice documentation to what some of the settings did and their respective options, but they don't show up when searching for a string or setting. So I'm left with scrolling the Internet for interpreted articles that don't quite know what they're talking about but vaguely list with the function does.

I'm not as Firefox literate as the previous members above, but I have question.

Why in the world, after this last update, when I click a bookmarked page or a link I saved to a website, it always refreshes and tries to redirect to another main page on that website? It happens with almost all websites I visit that I have bookmarks for or saved links to. I always have to click to go back to the original page I wanted.

I would say it would be convenient if the page would not exist anymore, but that's not the case. I find this feature not only intrusive but also very annoying. How do I disable this new feature/permission? Thanks

I have not noticed that. Does this only affect old bookmarks/shortcuts -- if you save a new bookmark/shortcut, does it work normally?

more options

Hi, and thank you for your reply. It actually happens regardless of the bookmark/shortcut age.

An example: I have my browser startup settings to restore my previous session. Let's say I have a retail store product on a tab; when I activate that tab, almost surely it will try redirecting to its category page or front-page, instead of staying still, as it used to be before this last update (I have the habit of leaving tabbed my ongoing activities.)

And I am talking about page tabs I used to have open before the update, so I can compare.

I find this issue the weirdest thing ever.

I have already tried the same web addresses on Chrome and the phenomenon doesn't happen.

The anomaly, rather.

Oh, this affects tabs restored from a previous session. Firefox usually restores those pages from the cache rather than re-requesting them from the site. I wonder whether there is a new problem with the cache or cookies or other data Firefox is using to restore the content??

Can you give an example of a URL that consistently gives this problem?

more options

No, it affects both restored tabs and, say, shortcuts I have on my desktop, old and new. My settings clear history every day. Most of my sites I'm mentioning are in Portuguese, so the experiment would be useless to you.

I would send you a video capture, but I believe I cannot send video through here, just images, right?

more options

The experiment would be useless to you because most of these sites detect country IPs and would change everything into the US English, or if they don't have a US store, they would change the page to the international website. The experiment wouldn't work.

Right, you would need to post it somewhere (OneDrive, Google Drive, YouTube, etc.) and share a link to the video.

more options

Although my browser language is English and I may have a tab from Amazon Germany, in English. It has happened there too. If I would send you the German link, it would shift immediately to Amazon US. Maybe it's an issue to Europe alone.

Maybe you guys need to contact Mozilla Europe and report the anomaly. I assume you are on the West coast, because the server is showing Pacific Time Zone.

I'm in California, but the code of Firefox is very similar globally. I can't think of any regional difference in how session restore works. (This is all data on your computer, or missing from your computer. It's between your installation of Firefox and the site. Mozilla isn't involved.)

more options

Of course Mozilla is not involved!!! Are you ever?!

I have just solve the issue with about:config, accessibility.blockautorefresh = true

See, the problem was not data in my computer neither in the install, it was in Firefox config, which changed with the new update.

Think twice before you discard responsibilities and blame others for your mistakes. Mozilla is not involved, right? Be humble and learn your lesson.

Oh, I did not realize you were using a non-default setting to prevent this problem before. Normally settings are retained during updates. I don't know what happened during your update; were any other preferences reset to default?

I don't know, did not check. I'll check them if needed.
