How to clear your search history i.e. search keywords in your "search" fields?

more options

I'd like to know how to clear your search history i.e. search keywords in your "search" fields.

I do NOT mean clearing my BROWSING HISTORY, but certain/all searches on the "search" fields.

Some sites seems to save some of the words, some sites do no not. I don't know how it works, really.

I remember being able just to point the word off the list and hit "delete" and it was gone. Doesn't work anymore these days.

Hi Baking_soda, if Delete does not work, try Shift+Delete and see whether that works.

Also, could you describe the search fields that work the way you expect and the ones that don't? For example:

  • Main address bar where page URL appears: shows matches from Firefox history, bookmarks, and open tabs, and live search engine suggestions (any of these can be turned off on the Options page)
  • Optional search bar for the main toolbar: shows matches from Firefox search history (combined with form history) and live search engine suggestions (any of these can be turned off on the Options page)
  • New tab page search bar (see attachment): shows matches from Firefox search history (combined with form history) and live search engine suggestions (any of these can be turned off on the Options page)

Is it one of those, or somewhere else?

On websites, it's probably form history. Could you take a look at this article: Control whether Firefox automatically fills in forms.

No, it's not form history/auto-fill.

It just oddly keeps certain seach words in the search field forever. I can clearly see that some of the words appear on a site on which I didn't even do that search. The sites then probably use the same code/software or something, right?

Sometimes Firefox caches things. Try Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page flushing form fields.

Otherwise, some websites are part of a network, like various AOL sites. They may use cookies to recognize you and pre-fill forms as you traverse the network.

I erased everything I could on all my browsers. Let's see if it works.

Do you think it's possible that when I do a search using, say, Chrome that the search word I used can be seen on the list of the "search" field on Firefox as well?

Firefox and Chrome don't exchange data directly, apart from possibly importing data during initial installation. More commonly the website recognizes you (for example, if you sign in) and attempts to present the same functionality in all browsers.
