I don't have any of those installed. Just the classic Avast. The problem occurs every time even at the same session. I believe, the problem is more severe when I open multiple tabs and start saving images. It rarely keeps the same save folder as I close the tabs after saving. It jumps from the Desktop to my default save Folder, or it changes to various subfolders inside the default save folder. I have the option "Always ask where to save items", activated.

Are you always saving files with the same file extension or are that different files ?

Firefox remembers the download location for each file type (extension), so if you save a different file extension then Firefox may choose another folder.

You can disable the feature to remember a host based download directory by creating a new Boolean pref on the about:config page with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref and set its value to false.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

It happens with every file type and every page. I can be saving from the same page, the same file type, in different opened tabs and almost every time it changes the save dir. The solution you are proposing is a work around but not what I'm looking for. I need to save wherever I want and I need the browser to remember the last save location as it should.

Just to be clear, I have Chrome and Opera installed and both work like a charm. For obvious reasons I prefer Mozilla, but this problem is a major setback...

Okay, you want to switch Firefox from remembering the last folder on a per site basis to a global basis. cor-el gave you the method to do that. In case the steps were not clear from the help article, I'll write them out in a different way:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should not show any existing preferences, but you should see a bar where you can choose the Preference type and a + button to add it:

(3) If needed, click the radio button for Boolean and then click the + button

(4) If the browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite preference is added as true, double-click it to toggle the value to false

Does that work on yours?

I think this fixed the issue. I'll keep monitoring the browser's behavior just to be sure, but it seems ok now.
