export of bookmarks not possible with version 69.0.3 (64-Bit)

Dear community,

I'm really frustrated by the yesterday update on firefox version 69.0.3 (64-Bit). It automatically installed a new profile (without any question!).

Today I started firefox and found out, that all my data wasn't migrated to the new profile. So I had to search for a solution and was able to switch to the old profile.

Although for safety reasons I wanted to backup my bookmarks. The export to a json- or a html-file is not possible. No error is shown! Simply no file is saved when I click on the save-button!

Also a downgrade to version 68 didn't bring a solution, because there I was not able to switch to my default-profile. The error message was shown, that the profile could be ruined, if it was already updated to the new version 69 and used there.

Because of the update I was forced to register to Firefox Sync and to uplad all my data there. I did never want to upload my bookmarks, passwords and addons somewhere to the internet.

I'm really frustrated by this update (after so many years of being a satisfied firefox user) and am thinking about an alternative browser.

I hope somebody can help me to not lose all my data.

PS: another error happened when I wanted to post this request: I clicked on "Automatically add" the Troubleshooting information. Then an error site was opened and when I wanted to go back all the request was erased...

Note that best is to continue usig the default that Firefox created and transfer personal data from the old profile to the new profile to prevent profile issues if you would want ot open a link from an external application in the default browser.

Firefox 67 and later can use a dedicated profile for each of the Firefox update channels and will lock the profile, so it can only be used by Firefox in a specific installation folder. For Release versions this profile would be a xxxxxxxx.default-release profile, profiles used in older Firefox versions usually used a xxxxxxxx.default profile (a refresh adds a time stamp).

If you lost personal data then it is possible that a new default-release profile folder has been created. See "Determine if Firefox has created a new profile":

You can copy files like these with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to recover specific data.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (passwords) and key4.db (58+) or key3.db (57 and older) (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
    if you only have key3.db then make sure to remove an existing key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) or cert8.db (57 and older) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
    if you only have cert8.db then make sure to remove an existing cert9.db
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

Note that you might be having a problem with places.sqlite if you can't export the bookmarks

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

In case errors are reported with "Verify Integrity" close and restart Firefox and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
