Gmail compose deletes embedded images

I'm using FF 68.0.1. If I compose a message, it might go something like this:

1. Type some text

2. Insert an image (web reference or upload, doesn't matter)

3. Navigate beyond the image

4. Type some more text

5. The image disappears from the compose window.

This behavior seems quite repeatable. The only workarounds I've found are to insert images as the very last step of the compose process or switch to another browser (Chrome, f'rinstance).
