Firefox virtually freezes with change of user on iMac

If Firefox is open on my iMac and I change to another user id on my iMac then return to the original user then Firefox virtually freezes for up to 5 minutes before becoming responsive again. Firefox was not used on the other user id. If Firefox is used on the other user id it is responsive as normal...only when returning to original user id. Any suggestions?
