firefox disappeared from start menu and desktop

Firefox showed a generic icon on the desktop, and on the start menu. It looks like the files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox directory are gone. I was able to get the icon back by sending the exe file as a shortcut from C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox to the desktop and that works.

Can anybody tell me why this happened. I have already scanned the computer with Windows Defender and no issues were found.
