See Keyboard shortcuts - Perform common Firefox tasks quickly.

Ctrl + K is Focus Search bar. If you don't use the search bar, it puts the question mark in the url bar to begin a search.

You probably want to focus the URL bar (F6, Alt + D or Ctrl + L).

You can consider to have a separate search bar, possibly in the overflow area (>>) on the Navigation Toolbar. Using the Ctrl+K keyboard shortcut will open the overflow area with focus on the search bar.
