the current session is stored in the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder.

There are also backups in the sessionstore-backups folder that you can copy to the sessionstore.js file to make Firefox use this file.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

It should be in your Profile :

• sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

It depends on whether Firefox is running, and whether you set Firefox to clear history at shutdown.

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

• "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
• (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
• type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" (or "Show in Finder") button.

In your profile folder, double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. This is where all the action is while Firefox is running.

The kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

• recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
• recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.jsonlz4
• previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
• upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update
• various .js files from Firefox 55 or earlier

The reason I referenced History being cleared when Firefox exits is that "Browsing and Download History" includes the session history, so if that setting got enabled, sessionstore.jsonlz4 won't be created at exit.

Hi FFus3r, the file names changed in Firefox 56 when LZ4 compression was introduced to session history files. I don't know what version you're running, but if you have 56 or later, you can check it for yourself.

When I force close my firefox a sessionstore file is not created still. It is a recent problem. I did find the recovery stuff under session backup. I'm not looking for that. Did the file name or location change with the update?

Why do you say this is a recent problem?? When you don't allow Firefox to shut down normally, of course it cannot create

[profile]\sessionstore.jsonlz4

as part of its standard shutdown procedure.

Instead, at startup, it will detect that file is missing and look for

[profile]\sessionstore-backups\recovery.jsonlz4

and perform a crash recovery with that.

This assumes default settings.

I do task manager end task on all my windows. I have 9 windows and 152 tabs so I don't think the session restore will restore them all if I close individually. I been doing this for years and it always creates sessionstore.jsonlz4

In the Task Manager, I was thinking of using End Process on the firefox.exe process, which kills it quickly. I don't know exactly how End Task on individual windows works. (And this is not the time to experiment...)

I agree you should not close windows individually to shut down Firefox. Firefox's session history only retains the last 3 closed windows, although you can increase that with a setting (mentioned below).

Instead, exit Firefox using "Exit" from the menu (Quit on Mac/Linux). Then none of the windows is considered closed and Firefox can complete an orderly shutdown.

To adjust the number of closed windows stored in session history:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste sess and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo preference to display a dialog where you can edit 3 to a higher value (I use 10) and then click OK

• I did End Process Tree for a long time until I found out how to do the About:Config to increase the Window count. ( I don't know why the default is set so low anyway.) I now do 'Exit' (Control-SHIFT-Q)*.

• I have, at the moment, 845 Tabs across 5 browser windows. My 'Main' window has the majority: 784 Tabs!

• * Can anyone confirm that 'Exit' under 'File' (Menu Bar) is the same as the 3-Line Menu 'Exit' which ends the FF session and not just 'Exit' or 'Close' that one browser window?

These do the same and I use them interchangeably:

• "3-bar" menu > Exit
• (menu bar) File > Exit
  • Can be activated by tapping and releasing in sequence:
    Alt f e

"Close Window" (which closes only the current window) is a separate command.
