multiple instances of firefox in task manager/background processes - not apps. win 10, only after FF Quantam update
New year, new effort because I never got a resolution before and no one has responded in a while.
have you checked under "background processes" - not apps, the first part, scroll down and have a look.
Every time I click a desktop shortcut to open a new FF windows (already one open, that be a new one), it adds a FF in background processes. If I click File, New Window, it doesn't seem to do it except once in a while, maybe once every 10 times or so (I'm not sure on that). I've had up to 30 before I found out what was happening. Started after the new FF 57 installed, never was a problem before. They can only be removed by deleting each one individually or by restarting the computer. Quitting FF and restarting does nothing. I can recreate this at will. I've tried all the recommended from my previous post with no success. Attached a screen shot, as you can see the use very little memory, but it still seems like a crash waiting to happen.

Anyone? Anything? Have you checked your task manager background processes for FF?
Dell alienware 17, 4 months old, wasn't happening prior to update, windows 10, all programs kept updated.

Yes. I'll run a deep scan later tonight when it can run without interruptions. Normal scans show nothing. Haven't shown anything before or after this started.

Sometimes I use this;
Create a batch file on your Windows computer and call it something like ‘KillFirefox.bat’ Place this in the batch file;
TASKKILL /IM Firefox.exe /t /f
Now place a shortcut on the desktop to the batch.
is there a purpose to this other than clearing out task manager? if no, I'm just trying to make sure I start new windows from File,New Window and checking occasionally. I don't really want to run a batch file just to clear out FF, it's only treating symptoms and not the cause.
if there is another purpose, please explain.

Yes, that would be best. The 64-bit and the 32-bit are stored in different directories on Windows.

As a test,
Try to disable multi-process tabs in Firefox. You can disable multi-process tabs in Firefox by setting the related prefs to false on the about:config page.
browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false
Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the I Accept the Risk button. At the top of the screen is a search bar.
After, restart Firefox. You can always change this back later.
Just a thought. I do not know how much work this gets and is HP, ruined a good product that produced comparable to what I build for myself. If out of warranty download https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10 and create a full install disk.
Cpu-z to find out Processor and ram settings and motherboard make and model https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html Go to the Motherboard makers page and download all the drivers and stuff need to put cpu back together with original motherboard components
Format and say g'bye to HP......

heh heh, Alienware, by Dell. No HP. I'm also not going to reformat and reinstall all my programs to fix this. Way too much work. There has to be a solution, probably something simple.
are you the only FF support guy that's attempting an answer?
