OS is Windows 7 HP. Running Firefox 54.0.1. After a refresh of FF I now get a pop-up when closing it calling for me to delete elements of my browsing session. We have two machines with the same OS and FF and have never seen this pop-up before. Both machines have Click n Clean which takes care of deleting history, etc., and shows as active in the extensions list. Note that the pop-up has the FF icon. I don't need this and have tried various menu settings but it remains. Would appreciate advice on how to cancel it, thanks in advance!

Interesting that I'm not the only one...

Will you please, please disable that extension   'Click&Clean'  ? It solved the problem for the other   OP   !!!

Also in the middle of all this, I have an email from Mozilla awarding me the "2017 Support Forum Badge". Maybe that's also some type of scam- I didn't click on the link provided.

No, sounds legit. You probably get this badge because you have posted a certain amount. But who cares about a badge right now, eh   ? Let's see if that drop-down   (sorry : box)   will finally disappear and stay gone   !

Nope, refreshed one computer only, and that's the one that now has the pop-up.

Phew,   huge relief   ! Even though I'm convinced that this has everything to do with the combination of these three : 1) Refresh, 2) You don't want to have History remembered, 3) You have the extension 'Click&Clean' installed.

Two more questions : 1) Do you still get that dropdown  ? 2) Have you clicked 'Cancel'  ?

What drop-down? The box in the screenshot opens over the desktop after closing FF.

Do you mean clicking "cancel" on that box? I have, and the box still appears, I think the "cancel" refers to the box function, not the box itself.

Okay,   I'll call it a box.

When I look at your screenshot :   the items that are checked, are the items you wanted cleared, right  ? (hence the extension 'Click&Clean') Next question :   have you ever clicked   'Clear now'  ? My quess is that Refresh somehow didn't clear history   (even though there may not even be any history to clear).

If clicking   'Clear now'   doesn't help you get rid of the nuisance,   we'll have to find the solution in a whole different direction.

The checked items were already checked, I didn't do it. I'm going to try closing FF now and when the box appears, I'll try unchecking the checked items to see what if anything changes. I'll be back!

Just closed down FF and when the box appeared, I unchecked all items in the list. On reopening and again closing, the box appeared with all the same items checked. Then reopened and closed FF again, this time clicked "cancel" in the box. Opened and closed yet again, the box still comes up with the same items checked.

what is clear is that the browser is hijacked. perhaps an add-in was once installed but due to being malicious, it never fully uninstalled. And inspite of being able to do a clean reinstall of the browser, that malware is still standing by.

1) please give us a screen shot of the windows start ups.

click on start>run>msconfig>startup tab.

be sure to expand any columns that cut off the name of the files being loaded at startup.

2) please give us a screen shot of the task manager processes while FF is running. you can open task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+del. once open you can freeze the process via its menu option.

What you can also try if you dont want to provide screen shots are any of the following:

1) ensure the FF is not set up to sync via the tools menu option. if so, end the syncing.

2) run HiJackThis anti-malware and remove any entries that correlate to the pop up and FF. Basically any entries citing "missing file" are ok to remove but leave microsofts entries alone.

3) run Spybot

I've been clicking "clear now" all the previous times the box showed up.

I've been clicking "clear now" all the previous times the box showed up.

I must have missed you mentioning it   ........

Scanning for malware, like 'databaseben' suggests was next on my list :

Go to the 3-bar menu => Addons => and look for any unfamiliar or suspicious looking extensions, like e.g.:

SafeSearch Incognito
SearchAssist Incognito

When you find any :   remove them.

Do the same in Windows' Control Panel => Programs.

However :   most malware will be 'hiding' somewhere , so let's run malware scans :

Further information can be found in this article :
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners.
They all work differently   -   what one program doesn't pick up, the other might.

Did not see any unidentified programs in the list, or any add-ons in the menu pages that I didn't recognize. Ran Malwarebytes a few days ago. Just finished running the others, no joy- pop-up is still with me.

If I were sure I could save my bookmarks (well over 200) I would uninstall and reinstall FF. The other settings I could make note of- extensions, etc. But in a recent thread here I only managed to restore those bookmarks by random luck, and many of them are of some importance to me.

Please, don't shoot, but : In that drop-down (sorry : box) - did you uncheck every item that you do not want cleared, and then click 'Clear now' ?

If uncheck all the items, the "clear now" option is ghosted and unavailable. And the only thing I ever shoot is my mouth.

You can create a backup and export file of your bookmarks for safekeeping, but you also can create a copy of your entire profile folder contents.

But I should add that uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox usually doesn't change anything because your settings and perhaps non-conflicting program files are preserved. If you think there might be corruption in the program folder, we generally suggest this (sorry if it's duplicate info):

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. It's not essential to uninstall Firefox, but you can if you like, saying No to any request about removing personal data.

It only takes a few minutes.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox to a convenient location. You can choose between:

Regular version for Windows 7-10 https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ Note: only runs Flash, no other legacy plugins "Windows" version is standard 32-bit version, which is generally recommended; to take advantage of more memory, you could switch to the 64-bit version, see: How to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox

Extended Support Release for Windows XP-10 https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ Note: Windows (32-bit) runs legacy plugins that ran in Firefox 51; 64-bit runs Flash and Silverlight. If anyone reading this is thinking of switching to the 64-bit version, see: How to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Using Windows Explorer/My Computer, rename the program folder as follows:

64-bit Windows users with 32-bit Firefox: Rename

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

Other Windows configurations: Rename

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Note: Some less used files may exist only in that OldFirefox folder, so I suggest retaining them for a few days in case we need to go looking for something in there.

Any improvement?

Uncheck the items that you do  not   want cleared only   .... When you uncheck everything, the 'Clear now' button will be greyed out. Check at least one item that you definately want cleared. And then :   click 'Clear now'   (unless it's greyed out ..... )

Could you compare your two Firefoxes to see which one(s), if either, are using the multiprocess feature? Here's how:

Are you using Multiprocess (e10s)?

Multiprocess creates a second firefox.exe or plugin-container.exe process to isolate the web content from the browser UI. You can check whether you have this feature turned on as follows. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, check the row for "Multiprocess Windows" and see whether the number on the left side of the fraction is greater than zero. If so, you are using e10s.

If the problem is limited to Firefox with Multiprocess enabled, you could try turning it off as follows:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste autos and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 preference to switch the value from true to false

Note: the exact name of the preference may vary, but it will start with browser.tabs.remote.autostart

At your next Firefox startup, it should run in the traditional way. Any difference?

What you can do slowpoke47 is:

1) open your firefox and shrink the window so it will be on one side of desktop 2) open task manager and shrink it so it will be on the otherside of the desktop 3) in task manager prioritize the process so the active ones will be at top of list. 4) now close the firefox browser and when that popup displays see what process takes priority in task manager.

Followed this sequence, see screenshot. Not sure what I'm looking at, however.

Yes, I've tried that as well, the "clear now" in that case is available, but the box still shows up.

To jscher2000- Thanks for responding. As a less-than-expert user, it will take me some time to understand your suggestions, I'll work on it.
