after multiple installations of flash firefox addon still lists as vunerable and should be updated. I presume the updates are not taking effect, or something else is stalling the system?

Could you check the following folder and see what versions of the Flash plugin you find:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

In particular, the plugin files have this pattern to the name, where nn is the major version number (like 22) and mmm is the minor version number (like 192):

NPSWF32_nn_0_0_mmm.dll

What files do you find?

Note: Windows may hide the .dll extension. To show all file extensions, see this article: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../show-hide-file-name-extensions

If there are no files matching that pattern, the installation failed. You could try a "full" or "offline" installer from the following page (if Adobe hasn't taken it down): https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

Many thanks for the guidance, files found are: NPSWF32_22_0_0_192.dll installed 06/07/16 and NPSWF32_21_0_0_242.dll installed 12/05/16. Hope this helps

Try deleting just the older DLL file, then exit Firefox and start it up again and hopefully that will resolve it.

deleted oldest file as requested now just get black screen where video would play (eg. BBC site) and now not even the "warning" you need flash player to view these files appears. Any ideas gratefully received. This by the way is the third install of firefox.

Check the global permission on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, look for "Shockwave Flash" -- if it's completely disabled, it will be at the bottom. Change its global permission to "Always Activate" or "Ask to Activate", as you prefer.

Is it there and does that work?

checked again following your recommendation, it is there it is set to always activate. I am today going to visit other sites via firefox to work out if it is just the bbc webpage that has this problem. at the moment black box where the film should load. Thanks for your help.

In case this is an issue with MPEG decoding support, could you check this test page:

https://www.youtube.com/html5

Normally you get 5 blue boxes and the last one red if the Windows Media Foundation is installed and operating normally and Firefox has its default settings.
