When I try to start firefox I get the following error message:- firefox.exe application error The application failed to initialize properly (0x000001d) click on ok to terminate the application. Firefox worked just fine until yesterday (5th May). My computer is an AMD 32bit processor running windows xp . I'm currently using the CometBird browser, but some of the web sites I visit keep asking me to upgrade to a newer browser. I hope you can help me:) Kindest regards Roger Reynolds

Chosen solution

Well, re-installing Firefox didn't work for you. CometBird is defunct as a project. Google Chrome doesn't even support Vista any longer, much less WinXP. You're kinda running out of XP compatible web browsers to use.

Have you considered switching that old PC to Linux? Many old hardware users are going to a "slim" Linux repo. Or maybe it's time for a new PC, with an up-to-date operating system?

Either of those would allow for an up-to-date web browser to be installed, and would come with a usable up-to-date web browser.

As an update firefox has now started working. So all is well :)

Unfortunately problem has now re-occurred, I have deleted fire fox and re-installed but to no avail I still get:- The application failed to initialize properly (0x000001d) click on ok to terminate the application. So as it stands I can't use fireFox :(

If Firefox is crashing why not provide us with some of the Crash Reports ID's?

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

Whoops, didn't realize that your Firefox is crashing when you open it.

Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. On the keyboard, press [Windows] The image "Windows key" does not exist. + [R]. This should bring up a Run window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, type %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.
