Reader view has stopped working

I was an avid fan. I used it on a dozen of my favorite sites. A few days ago after the recent update...41.0.1...the button disappeared.on all of my sites. After checking about:config, confirming the setting and re-booting, the Reader View button has reappeared. BUT, when clicked on, it erases EVERYTHING on the page except the headline and the byline and the left sidebar. Everything else, including the entire text of the story. I am left facing a white page. It happens on every page where the button appears.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

The default this is the only theme that works with Reader View. I disabled my extensions, one by one. Eliminating them did not affect the failure. Then I loaded 4 different themes which I had used in the past and were disabled in my Add On/Appearance tab. Reader View did not work with any of them. It only works with the Default theme.

I assume you mean the problem is with "full" themes and not just lightweight themes consisting of a couple of images. For those, if I change the theme and reload the page, the Reader view button become available and works normally.

Could you contact the theme authors to ask for their feedback on this problem to see if they know of a workaround? There often is contact information on the page for the theme on the Add-ons site, in the right sidebar. Or check whether one is mentioned in the theme's reviews.
