I upgraded to FF 40.0.2 from 39.0.3 and many of the toolbar icons became tiny and/or strange

Before upgrading everything was fine. Through many upgrades my customisations and "Classic Theme Restorer" settings survived and I was happy.

However, after upgrading to 40.0.2 from 39.0.3 the toolbar icons became strange.

I attach a screenshot which shows this.

NONE of the installed plugins and add-ons have been installed AFTER the upgrade.

I was thinking of downgrading back to version 39.0.3 but was worried that this might cause further problems or that I might not downgrade correctly

Sorry, I think you must have misunderstood me.

I did not get around to trying your suggestions because I have been away for a couple of weeks and also been very busy. I did not intend to waste your time and apologise if that was how it seemed.

Nor was I "bragging" or dismissing the various suggestions made, but was expressing my surprise at finding on my return that my problem seemed to solve itself as mysteriously as it had originally appeared and that the problem seemed to be based in the CTR update.

Had that not happened I would be trying what you had recommended.

Best

Peter

You posted here with Classic Theme Restorer 1.3.7.1 where 1.3.8 is the latest version.

Thank you for that advice - it had not occurred to me that I needed to update Classic Theme Restorer, and unless my memory is a fault, it previously updated automatically.

Is there any particular procedure for updating this - e.g. do I need to close tabs - or do I simply click the "new version" link - and then restart FF?

Thanks for any further advice you can give

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Now press the gear icon at the top of the page, and select Check For Updates, then after Update Add-ons Automatically.

Sorry Edmeister and Fred McD, but I have checked and my Classic Theme Restorer is already on 1.3.8 (or auto-updated to 1.3.8 whilst i have been messing about) and I am still getting the silly icons shown in the screenshot attached to my original message above.

In case it is relevant, Bing Search Engine, British English Dictionary, LogMeIn Inc Remote Access Plugin and Skype Click to Call have all been marked "could not be verified for use in Firefox" and I have therefore disabled them all (along with some other extensions which I had already disabled).

I am getting desperate and, unless there is a quick fix would, like to revert to version 39.0.3, which was giving me no problems.

Whilst I appreciate the risks of reverting to a previous version I should be grateful if someone could direct me to the best way of doing this.

At the moment I am still using the old style sync and on another PC where Firefox 39.0.3 and Classic Theme Restorer 3.7.1 are still installed and there are no problems with the synced Extensions

That just means that the add-on has not been signed by Mozilla. They should be safe to use, if you want.

Hi FredMcD (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/fredmcd-hotmail)

Sorry not to have replied earlier, but I have been away.

You asked me to post a screenshot of my problem, but I already posted one with my original post above.

It was only a screenshot of the corrupted toolbars, as the rest of Firefox (the browsing window and the bookmarks toolbar) were OK.

If you look at my screenshot you will see that on the menu bar there are some blank boxes. Hovering the cursor over them (in a live instance of Firefox) reveals that they are "Cut", "Copy", "Paste", "Print", "Group your tabs" and "Display in Full Screen", and they work if clicked even though blank.

Then there are a couple of tiny pairs of icons (which, when the cursor is over them, reveal "Open a new Window" and "Open a new Private Browsing Window") then some normal icons, ("Bookmarks", "History", "Saved Passwords", "Default User Agent", "AdBlock Plus") and then another pair (which reveal "Manage your add-ons").

Below that is the tab bar and at the far left a pair of tiny icons (which bring up "Google"), and then either side of the "100%" are invisible "plus" and "minus" zoom icons. Then at the right of the tab bar are three pairs of tiny icons ("Display download progress", "Share this page", and "Last Sync").

None of the tiny icons represent the functions called by clicking or hovering.

I realise that many of the icons are in non-standard positions, as I used the "Customise" menu (and the previous method of customising) and "Classic Theme Restorer" when they first became available, and my customising has previously survived all Firefox updates - until 40.0.2!

I have since updated to 40.0.3 but it has not changed anything in the above.

It is still possible to browse with Firefox normally, and use the corrupt icons, but I have not been able to find the Firefox "Customise" menu.

I am wondering if the only solution is to uninstall and re-install Firefox, but how deep does the reinstall have to go? I do not want to lose passwords, history or book-marks although it may be that they could be synced back from other installations where I have the sync'd Firefox set-up.

(Note: I am still on old Sync and have not yet updated to the new version.)

I should be enormously grateful if you could suggest the best way for me to resolve this problem.

Thanks

Peter

P.S. I have checked for Add-on updates

Have you considered creating a new Profile, and just installing the add-ons that you currently "need"?

more options

I do not know how to create a new profile, and I have already disabled the add-ons I do not need

more options

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Do you have a chrome folder with a userChrome.css file in the profile folder?

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Well, well, well!

I have not tried any of the suggestions made by the-edmeister, fredmcd or cor-el (apart from updateting CTR and marking as disabled add-ons that "could not be verified for use in Firefox" as advised earlier), but today when I restarted Firefox I noticed that all the silly tiny icons had gone!

Further investigation revealed that CTR had been updated to version 1.3.9 and I began to suspect that CTR was in fact the culprit.

However, I then noticed that not all was normal. The " - 100% +" triplet of icons and the "cut copy paste" triplet (available in the Firefox Customise menu) were now larger that all the others (on the toolbars) and so again I suspect that CTR is in fact the culprit!!!

However, what is puzzling is that CTR is sync'ed to my Desktop PC and neither the "tiny icons" nor the oversized icons have appeared on the Firefox installation there.

So, are you wasting our time by asking for support and not trying what we recommend or what? And then you brag about it? Are you ever going to try some troubleshooting as recommended or just talk about it?
