Firefox load-time steadily increasing. No change of Add-ons
Hi to all readers ! I have been running Firefox as my browser on a Linux PC system for many years. I do a lot of web searching for scientific information, so I have many Add-ons installed. Over the years, the boot-up time has steadily increased to around 25 secs so, about a month ago, I systematically tested the Add-ons to find which was slowing things down and discovered that AdBlock Edge was the culprit. I replaced this with plain AdBlock and my boot-up time dropped to about 4 secs --- which was fine. However, over the past week or two it has begun to creep up again even though nothing in the configuration has changed. I am running Firefox Ver:36.0.1. for Linux Mint Ver 17 ("Qiana") on a Dell GX-520 tower with 2 GB of memory. Firefox is the only app running on this machine. All the up-dates for "Mint" have been installed. Boot-up time is now averaging about 11 secs with variations between 7-13 secs. Can anyone please explain why the boot time varies when nothing on the system has been changed and why it is apparently increasing from an average of 4 secs. Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options) key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
To FredMcD - I thank you for your replies but I think that you (perhaps) misunderstood the nature of my problem. I was aware that Add-ons can slow the boot-up of Firefox (Ff) and I have already experimented and found a suite of these which gives a tolerable boot time. My question was - "Why is it that, having found a suitable set of Add-ons, boot time is deteriioration once again ?" - In you second post you inadvertently provided a probable answer - 'The boot time for Ff reflects the length of time for which this was open in a previous session.' - Since I use Ff for research, the length of my sessions is very variable and some of these can be very long indeed, particularly if I am following a trail of links in long scientific articles. I think, therefore, that the solution to my problem is to periodically quit and restart Ff, so as to keep the duration of sessions approximately equal. To Aleksej -- I thank you for posting a reply to my query. I think that FredMcD inadvertently provided the answer -- boot-time reflects the duration of the previous session. So -- if this is protracted the subsequent boot-up time is lengthed. I've marked this question as "SOLVED". Many thanks and best regards --
