"Read" messages not shown in Inbox, though "Unread" Quick Filter button is not down.

I clicked "Unread" in the Quick Filter, then unclicked it, but I can no longer see the thousands of "Read" messages in my Inbox. What's up?

click the quick filter icon on the toolbar to make it's toolbar appear and disappear to make sure it got the cancel message

No change after clicking the quick filter icon and making the toolbar icon appear and disappear.

Clicking the "Unread" button, then unclicking the Quick Filter icon/button and reclicking the Quick Filter icon, brings the Quick Filter bar back with the Unread icon UNCLICKED but makes no change in the number of messages displayed. Weird.

The number of messages shown in the status (?) bar is more than 5000. The unread messages number there is 20-ish. I see only 20 or so messages.

By the way, I'm up to date on Thunderbird at 31.4.0.

It was set to "Unread" and that was the problem. Thanks!
