RE: "Access Denied" question following install of Firefox. I have same problem. Details follow: I tried opening in Safe Mode which did not work. I have Administrative access. When I click the general tab in properties I get a message that "firefox.exe" does not exist. Neither that file nor any other "install" type of file appears in the Mozilla Firefox directory except for "uninstall". I have downloaded and tried to install seven times from six different sources, including Mozilla, all with the same results. I've also tried a number of solutions from the web for this error message with no greater success. I tried, first, doing an upgrade then deleted the older version of Firefox and have done "install" since. Avast, Malwarebytes and Threatfire have found no malware.

I have never had a similar problem with Firefox before and I've used it for years. Anyone have any ideas I haven't already tried? I'm tired of using Internet Explorer! RE: troubleshooting information below--Windown will not open the downloaded file.

I've downloaded Firefox from seven different sites

Please download the full installer ONLY from Mozilla.org. Download Firefox Full Installer For All languages And Systems {web link}

Download programs only from trusted sites. Some bad people take a great program, turn it into mal-ware, and let it loose on the world.

What is giving you the error? Firefox or the computer?

The computer--specifically explorer.exe. BTW LockHunter cannot find the firefox.exe file, either, although Search lists it as a program file.

Put up the search page. Right click on Firefox, and select Open Folder

This is the first thing I did several days ago. That was the first time I got the "access denied" message. And I've tried this perhaps 50 times since after I've tried some "fix" with the same results.

Incidentally, I've been through the "properties > security" menu every way possible. I have administrative access. I think the clue may be somewhere within the anomaly of why "Search > Firefox > right click" on the file gives "access denied" and the command DIR indicates "file not found." Also LockHunter indicates "missing file." (Yes, I'm putting the complete path in--I've used MS Ooperating systems since they came on the market in 1981 with DOS.)

The "owner" for this seemingly non-existent file is also blank and will not accept a change in ownership to my access.

A corrupted download is the first thing to suspect but I've downloaded Firefox from seven different sites with the same "install" results. I've used Firefox for years and never had a problem with it before. I'm stumped.

These steps are recommended for this error message mentioned: Troubleshooting Extensions and Themes, however it seems like you may need to reinstall Firefox since the directory cannot be found.

Other solutions to this have been to uninstall and use CCleaner to clean up any old registries. However this will loose data from the profile.

I am seeing the errors and troubleshooting steps all mentioned here:

And it seems the best bet would be to uninstall and reinstall. If you can see the profile folder, it is possible to make a back up of the profile Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles here.

For a clean reinstall: Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

The mozilla site was the first I tried--access denied. I've downloaded from both recommended site and mozilla.com at least five times since then with same result--access denied.

Guigs2-- Thank you for your time making out your response. I've done all those steps in that order at least a dozen times--access is still denied. However, did them again after receiving your msg--same result: Access Denied.
