Bookmarks keep disappearing
I work in the IT department for a law firm and one of our end users likes to use FireFox as their web browser. Over the last month or two I have received a phone call about their bookmarks disappearing and with FireFox crashing. I have been able to restore the bookmarks and the user is fine for a couple of days but then I will receive another help ticket that the bookmarks have disappeared again. I will outline what I have done in the troubleshooting section. Any assistance to make this issue stop would be appreciated.

Maybe the places.sqlite is corrupted, try delete it.
First show the hidden files and folders:
Then go to your profile:
Close Firefox.
Then delete the places.sqlite file, restart Firefox and test.
It looks like this information was hard to find so I am going to post my troubleshooting steps in the reply section.
1. When we try to restore from a previous day we get an error message.
2. When we try to select a file to restore from we get an error message.
The fix we have come up with:
1. We have to show all hidden files so we can access the AppData folder
2. We go into the AppData\Roaming and find the Mozilla folder where the FireFox settings are stored
3. We rename the Mozilla folder to something like !!!!!!!!27FEB2014_Mozilla!!!!!!!!!!!!! so when we open Firefox again it won't try to access that folder
4. We then open FireFox which opens like the first time because it has no settings
5. We then select a file to restore from and navigate to the !!!!!!!!27FEB2014_Mozilla!!!!!!!!!!!!! folder we created and restore from an old bookmark.
This gets everything back to normal for a few days then everything goes away again and we have to redo this process.

By renaming the original directory file and opening FireFox again it creates a new directory with new settings. This would render the "corrupted" places.sqlite obsolete at the same time. So I feel like that is not the issue.
What error message do you get?
Is that user using any external cleanup software that might corrupt files in the Firefox profile folder?
The places.sqlite file shouldn't get corrupted in normal conditions causing bookmarks to disappear and failure to restore a JSON backup.
Did you ever try to use the check the places.sqlite database?
I was trying to get a screen shot of the error message to post but i can't replicate that error currently. But it looks like it loses connection with the profile all together. In the drop down it recognizes the backup files but when you click the file it cannot access the file path.
As a firm we use CCleaner from Piriforms but that machine does not currently have it installed.
