Every time I start Firefox, it crashes immediately. I've tried everything and spent a lot of time trying to fix it but couldn't. I uninstalled, delete Mozilla Firefox file, re-installed it and again it crashed and couldn't open.

Try to set the gfx.content.azure.enabled pref to false or if this didn't help disable Direct2D by setting the gfx.direct2d.disabled pref to true on the about:config page and leave hardware acceleration otherwise enabled.

That way you still have the benefit from hardware acceleration, but may not suffer from rendering issues.

You can also try to uninstall Windows update KB2670838 if you have this update.

Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

I've tried that few times already but didn't solve my problem. It does the same thing over and over, It crashes every time. I'm using Windows 7 and have updated regularly.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

I'm using Norton Internet Security now and have updated and scanned my PC as recently as this morning and couldn't find any virus or malicious software. Should I still try any of the software above and would not be conflicted with Norton?

I don't think there will be any conflict. You can try one of them.

Well, I cannot open Firefox so these options would not be accessible. I did install one of the anti-spyware and scanned my PC. It found over 200 tracking cookies and deleted them but it didn't help. Again, it would not start. I got the same error.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe Mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Wow, disable (unchecked) "Use hardware acceleration when available" did the trick. It works now after many hours of trying to fix the problem. I uninstalled many software that I thought might conflict with FIrefox but that was it. Thank you very much for all of your help.
