I recently updated firefox and have a problem similar to what others have posted here. When typing a URL in the address bar and hitting enter there is no response. The major difference is I do not have any plugins or add ons or new themes. I ran combofix and found no virus. I uninstalled then reinstall FF. Didn't work. Then i went into registry and manually removed all FF files and reinstalled. Didn't work. I am currently using chrome and would be happy to come back to FF if it starts to work again. Any ideas guys? Thanks!

I actually don't recall seeing someone say they couldn't navigate using the URL bar. Is it a real URL or a search query?

To reset your toolbars to factory default, you can do this:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Restart Firefox. Any improvement?

If the problem is with URL bar searches, try this add-on:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/

Try:

You can try to check and repair the places database with this extension:

You can still try Safe mode to check for other causes.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Thanks for the fast reply guys! I ran through this link and it didn't help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile I can't perform some of these functions as it requires you to be able to go to a website for plug-in updates and such.

I can enter www.anywebsite.com in either the address bar or search bar and there is no response.

I went here and installed the search reset by using the Install Add-On From File option:(note i had to use IE to download. Chrome had the link greyed out. Could just be a preference setting I haven't looked at) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ After FF says Search Reset has been installed successfully nothing happens. It does not show up on the Add-Ons Manager screen. I tried resetting FF and I definitely was not in safe mode. FF does not work in safe mode either. This is strange because the Places Maintenance installed fine. This is looking bleak and I am at my wits end.

The SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the about:addons page.

Did you delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox) before reinstalling Firefox?

It isn't a requirement to check for outdated plugins and update them to create a new profile.

Yes I deleted the described file.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
