Search history in Google toolbar is great, it won't work in Firefox 4 - why?
Google Toolbar is fundamental to the way I use the Web. In particular, the ability to access search history and select different items on it is essential to me. This worked in Firefox 3.6 but not in Firefox 4. I spent a whole evening playing with Firefox 4 and tuning the system to the way I work. In the end, I gave up with it since my browser no longer worked in a way I regard as intuitive.
I've been with Firefox since it started, largely because it has, up to now, done more things in a more sensible way than the competition. Part of this is accommodating major extensions. Now, the language suggests that extensions are not your responsibility. I'm sorry, I disagree - compatibility with extensions is the main strength of Firefox. Ignore that and you're finished.

Current version of Google Toolbar.
The Search History in Google Toolbar displays a list of previous searches that you can select from. Under Firefox 4 the selection does not work.
I'm not a very technical person, so I can't tell you what to do to make your google toolbar work in Firefox 4... but I did want to say that it Does work. I upgraded to 4 on the 22nd, and had no trouble with my google toolbar. I keep all my bookmarks in googletoolbar, so they are portable to guest-computers. My life is in my gmail and Gbars!! so yeah, I know what you mean, Gbar HAS to work in Firefox. I noticed, before the move to 4, that I had lost the ability to search my history from the right google-search-bar. At the same time I lost the ability to change my search engine. I assumed this was caused by an auto-update with Google? Had I used google exclusively I'd probably not have noticed at all. I use the Firefox Awesome bar, but yes, rely a good bit on the google search history. It's still available to me on the Gbar itself, and I don't have the gbar 'hidden'. I use the Classic Toolbar layout in Gbar Options. I've customized my gbar so the search is on the right, so it's just under the search-engine box in the Nav bar. Have you tried the Replace Firefox Searchbar layout? That would replace the Awesomebar with the Googlesearch bar. I did go in and tweak the appearance of my Gbar under the Gbar customize when I moved to Fire4, and added some new buttons and repositioned things. I LOVE the new Tab-groups feature in 4... I'm addicted to working and organizing in tabs, so as long as Gbar functions I'll press on with 4.
I have the same problem and found this somewhat helpful "workaround" on the Google site:
Google Toolbar Known Issues
When you attempt a search from the search box on your Toolbar it may not allow you to select items from your drop-down list of web history or search suggestions.
As a workaround, try using your keyboard to navigate the drop-down list to select your web history or search suggestions.
Further to this issue. I have just bought a new laptop and installed Firefox 4.1 and IE 9 on it, together with the Google Toolbar. The Toolbar seems to work fine with Firefrox 4.1, even though Mozilla recommend that you do not install it.
