I need Better protection

Brian Houting

Someone claiming to be with Microsoft froze my computer until I answered whether I wanted them to know where I am at. I need protection from hackers like this. I want to be able to do a full scan on my computer.

Hi Brian,

That sounds like a common scam. If a website displays something like this, you can simply ignore it and close the website. If the problem persists, you may want to check the settings for your home page and the new tab page to see if they’ve changed. Please take a look here: How to set the home page

If you’re receiving notifications, you may want to check which websites are authorized to send notifications. For more information, see here: Web Push notifications in Firefox

I'd recommend that you install uBlock Origin to block ads and scam messages like this one.

If the problem continues, you should scan your computer with an antivirus program such as Microsoft Defender, which comes preinstalled with Windows. Alternatively, you can use a tool like Malwarebytes AdwCleaner to check whether adware is installed on your computer.

If someone calls you and claims to be from Microsoft, you can simply hang up and ignore them. Please never give such people access to your computer.

If you've already installed a program they wanted (such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or similar), you should uninstall that program as well.
