The save password option is selected. And when password is needed to be entered, a conversation box does pop up asking me whether to save the password or not. Even when I answered yes to the question, no password was saved for me. I do have a different profile set up in D drive, instead of using the usual default profile. May be that is causing the problem?

Do you currently see any usernames and passwords in the Password Manager?

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security: Logins: "Saved Logins" -> "Show Passwords"

If that is not the case then you can check for problems with the logins.json and key3.db files in the profile folder that stores login data.

Try to rename/remove logins.json and key3.db in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

I did as you suggested, changing the names of those 2 files and restarting Firefox. However, Firefox still did not save the password I entered. I also noticed that those 2 files you mentioned were not recreated by Firefox even though the old files were removed by changing the file names. I think if Firefox is executing correctly, 2 new files should be created first, hence the bug.

Try : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

I went through the whole process as you suggested, and the result is the same as before of not saving passwords. Interestingly, after I reinstalled Firefox and started it, it automatically picked up my old profile! At first, I thought I would have to go and change the profile location myself before it knows where it is. May be it picked up the old data file from C drive and restored everything to where I want it to be. Anyway, my old problem still remains. By the way, my computer is new, and has solid state drives, so disk cleanup is not really needed even though I did go through with it.

You can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Yes,a new profile does solve the problem of saving passwords. So I thought if I just uninstall Firefox completely, and install another new one and resync from passport, then it is done. However, strangely when I reinstall Firefox, it automatically picks up my old profile. Even if I delete the old profile, I receive a message saying that my profile is missing, and the program just stop executing. Can you tell me how I can install a clean version of Firefox? I also tried creating another profile, and to resync it with passport. However, passport does not recognize my sign-in name, saying account does not exist! Why is that? Another bug?

Just create a new profile and use this profile when it is working. No need to (re)install Firefox for this issue and Firefox will find and use the profile folder that was previously selected. You can use the Profile Manager or the about:profiles page to remove no longer needed profiles. If you delete the current profile folder then Firefox won't start unless you remove profiles.ini as well.

You can also try to refresh Firefox to see if that works better for you.

You did not tell me why Firefox Sync does not recognize my sign in name and password when I switched to another profile. I just need to transfer all my setting to the new profile, that is why using the Sync feature will solve my problem. However, I can't connect to Sync with my sign in name and password once I switched to the new profile!

You can copy files like these with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to recover specific data. Note that you should be cautious with copying SQLite database files if you previously had problems.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved form data
  • logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
  • cert8.db and possibly cert_override.txt for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other Site Preferences
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs

You can open the about:profiles page to find buttons to go to each registered profile or use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder.

I give up. It seems that every time I followed your instruction, the situation gets worse. After I followed your last instruction, and lost some of my saved items such as add-ons, passwords were still not being saved in the new setup. I even came across situations when I couldn't even create a new profile etc. It is too complicated to explain everything here. Anyway, I have decided to stop this endeavor and live with the situation. Hopefully someday Mozilla will solve this bug in an update. Thank you again for everything, even though the problem is not solved.
