Bookmarks are being created automatically when I access a web site. I have dozens of folders containing thousands of sites I don't want.

First off: I was unable to upload a .png or .xlsx to this issue. Suggestions there? My issue: Bookmarks are being created everything I hit a web site that is already contained in my Bookmark folder. The results is I have over 7000+ web pages in dozens of newly created Bookmark folders and Bookmark Bars (up to 5 of those) that I did not intentionally create. I've attempted to delete them using the online instructions, but that is not working. Additionally, Firefox is now syncing with Safari on my iPhone - including all of the unnecessary bookmark and bookmark bars. I've disconnected the synch feature by following online instructions, but the systems are continuing to synch anyway.

Perchance are you using Firefox Sync along with the iCloud Bookmarks extension?

Doing that has been reported to cause bookmarks and folders to be duplicated, and might cause bookmarks to be saved that you didn't specifically save yourself. Use one or the other, not both.

As far as fixing the damage - Disconnect from Sync before attempting to remove the duplicates. And when you're done with the "fixing", change your Sync / Firefox Account password to "flush" your data from the Sync server before Connecting to Sync again. Otherwise the problem will re-occur. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-set-sync-my-computer#w_remove-a-device-from-sync

You could try using the Places Maintenance extension on all your Firefox installations to repair the places.sqlite database automatically; but it may not work completely due to that 3rd part extension. Even so, it should save you a bit of time.

As far as uploading images to this forum; doesn't always work in the initial posting that starts a new thread. Png and jpg images are needed; other file formats aren't accepted.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode (see below) to see if the problem goes away. Are the websites you visit in Safe Mode also automatically bookmarked?

How to use Firefox Safe Mode: Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

Use with Extreme Caution;

Bookmark Duplicate Cleaner {web link} Scans for bookmark duplicates and allows you to delete them

Bookmarks Checker - check for bad links {web link} Check favorites for broken or bad links. It checks for bad links and displays a report if it finds something. Check for 404 links, timeout links.
