Firefox freezing showing frozen image of recently viewed flash objects, and repeatedly crashing

Firefox repeatedly freezes after 30 minutes or so of use, and strangely when freezing it shows a blank page but with freeze frames recently opened YouTube videos and other flash objects, although it may not be all specific to flash. I can't remember exactly but there may have been some non-flash things showing too, but as far as I'm aware it was flash. It keeps doing this repeatedly and finally crashes. If I could give a number of how many times I've had to go through these repeated crashes, they have happened about 500-1000 times in the last 6-ish months. I can't go a day without them. They happen numerous times a day.

And here's the bit that stumps me. I've did the normal extension troubleshooting procedure, but even when every single plugin has been disabled at one point, it still crashes, so no extension can be the problem (also these crashes started about a year ago and the plugins and extensions hadn't been causing many problems before then). I also tested plugins, disabling any I didn't need and thought could be causing a problem, but it still crashed. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled flash, and updated it numerous times in the hope that the crashes would stop. But they haven't. I have EVEN switched from Firefox Beta (which I was in when it started) to Firefox (which still caused crashes) and now to Aurora, which, as you guessed it, STILL causes crashes. I can be on any page at all and it will crash. I have sent hundreds and hundreds of angered crash reports, no update or fix has been given that has helped the problem. I'm pretty desperate for answers at this point.

Below are all the crashes that have happened this month.

Please help, thanks.

(These are the hang reports that didn't show correctly in the above post.

Your patience is remarkable. I would have been posting here before the 20th crash. (Also, I've probably said worse things to my computer.)

The 4 most recent reports indicate that Firefox is running out of memory. In one case, it shows 90% of system memory used, which is borderline, but for the case where 75% of memory was used, I'm surprised, I would expect a slowdown but not a crash.

Three thoughts:

(1) Is there anything special about the way Firefox is starting up, for example, with "Compatibility" options set in the program shortcut, or through a security sandbox, that might change how it interacts with Windows to request more memory?

(2) Your crash report shows nearly 20 extensions active. If you discover a site or set of actions that reliably cause the crash, could you try it in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled (Flash and other plugins still run)

If Firefox is not running: You can start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

In the small dialog that should appear, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?

(3) Strange graphical anomalies can indicate an incompatibility with your graphics card drivers. The standard workaround is to disable Firefox's use of hardware acceleration.

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

This takes effect the next time you exit and restart Firefox.

more options

Oh yeah I forgot to mention I've tried disabling hardware acceleration in both browser settings and in flash object settings, but to no avail. And yes I have roughly 18 or so extensions, but I haven't changed them much in the last year, and they didn't cause problems before roughly a year ago, and plus I have troubleshooted them all and they've all been disabled at one point but the crashes still occurred.

And after every crash, firefox almost always goes to the couldn't-restore-session page, and it is a little slow starting up.

more options

On a positive note, taking a look at the crashes there are bugs that are fixed in the next nightly build 31:

However the others are crashing with acceleration on, most likely you turned it off after though and it crashed again. The version you are using, version 30 is still in development, so there will be more changes as you use it. Any information in regards to what you were doing right before the crash will help get a steps to reproduce to the two bugs attached to the second and third reports.

Also if we can find the regression period Regression this would be helpful too. Do you have version 29, Aurora on your computer as well? Download Aurora and does it reproduce with the same profile?

In a run window :

  • On 32-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
  • On 64-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p

Thank you for your help on this issue.

This has been happening since long before I was on Aurora 29 (I'm now on 30) (and yes, that includes it happening on Aurora 29). I said in my original post I can be doing anything from watching a YouTube video to browsing Wikipedia, Facebook, a text-only website, anything, and it will crash. It froze with the effects described above just a minute ago but luckily I caught a screen capture of it for you to see (and luckily it didn't crash, but this is what I will see moments before a crash):

(The yellow smudges are where I've censored the image - I was watching EDM music and minimally clothed girls tend to appear in the thumbnails of mixes)

more options

I have a feeling there is no way it could be showing these flash objects without building up a temporary storage of them somewhere (probably not purposely or not as it's supposed to do) and this overload could be causing the crash. I clear cache multiple times as I thought that would clear it but it has no effect.

This is what happens after it crashes: http://i.imgur.com/UmH7Flh.png

When it crashed this time I was not using Firefox. I wasn't even on the window.

I tried to do that mozregression thing but it was too complicated for me. I updated to the recent Aurora 31 but the problem STILL persists. And I caught another screenshot of a freeze happening just so you get the idea: http://prntscr.com/3fyyva

The plugin container crashed and sometimes it is freezing, even after turning off hardware acceleration.

The second bug has a new update on it that says an add on was developed to restart the browser when the virtual memory is about to cause a crash Prevent Out of Virtual Memory however it is not entirely compatible.

It is possible to bypass the plugin container, Youtube video on how to do this at least for the time being.

Are you also receiving new crashes with the new version: crashes [Bug 984379 NS_ABORT_OOM(unsigned int) | nsAString_internal::Assign(wchar_t const*, unsigned int because of loading streaming videos] may need examples of this issue.

Thank you for the screenshots as well.

I just tried the plugincontainer.exe disabling thing and will wait to see a result.

These are all the latest crashes since 5th May.

And I caught another screenshot of a catastrophic crash (the crash happened seconds after I took this shot: http://i.imgur.com/DhEIg5Q.png (personal info is whited out).

Oh yeah and caution of obscene language in the user comments of the crashes, at times when I'm in the middle of watching a YouTube video or doing something that takes ages to load back, I get pretty angry.

more options

Understandable, sorry for the frustration, thank you for the screenshot and the crash reports. I was looking at these yesterday and was not sure what I could add. The version 31.0a2 is crashing.

Second crash:

  • [996303 NEW --- crash in NS_ABORT_OOM(unsigned int) | AppendUTF8toUTF16(nsACString_internal const&, nsAString_internal&)]

Third/Fourth:

  • [Bug 990156 - OOM crashes on 30.0a2 (see attached memory reports]

I added some troubleshooting info to the second bug, as it may still be memory. Have you updated your extensions?

more options

Actually I haven't updated my addons in a while, thank you for reminding me. Although I did try disabling each one or multiple ones at a time and it didn't work. There wasn't one addon which I hadn't disabled, yet it still crashed.

more options

Wait a minute, do you have an ativirus that might be blocking the Flash plugin? Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again

One of the crashes is in encoding transfer? utf8 to ustf18? I might be going crazy as well....

more options

Would that not disable flash altogether? I haven't changed around my antivirus settings for years and this problem only started last year. Flash works fine, although a bit choppy when first playing videos and can lag sometimes and when I pause a YouTube video sometimes the video will do a strange thing where it will play faster for a few seconds to catchup with the lag, and only then pause. And also sometimes I do get flash plugin crashes, but normally that's when I have a lot of videos open, but it can happen when I have only 1 or 2 strangely.

more options

And I also have that thing where the addons list says I have Flash 12 AND Flash 13 installed and activated at the same time, but when I disable one, it disabled the other.

more options

I fail to see what plugincontainer helps in the diagnosis of this issue.

That said, the variety of crash signatures suggests the possibility that the problem is not Firefox. Therefore, I suggest a) post a crash ID that occurred with Firefox in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode b) if it still crashes, install flashblock addon and run with that. If it only crashes when you permit a flash image, then you're on to something.

> Oh yeah and caution of obscene language in the user comments ... it would be very appreciated if you could eliminate that, and just stick to the facts

more options

p.s. how many tabs and windows are open?

more options

Sorry for the late reply, normally I have roughly 30-40 something tabs open which I am fully aware is quite a lot, but understand that these crashes have happened when I've had as little as 10-15 open. I have only just seen your suggestion about Safe Mode so I shall try that, and I have ceased the language in the reports.
