If you downloaded an installer as part of the upgrade, could you check your download history and post the URL here to confirm that it was from an official source?

You may have an unwanted extension that is generating those messages. Try this:

Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

• Ctrl+Shift+a
• orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable. (Or if it's obviously bad, click Remove.)

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that shut them down?

If there is no Remove button for an extension, it typically needs to be uninstalled through the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to bring the most recent additions to the top and see what unexpected extras might have been bundled into some recent installs.

The problem went away, I think after I removed some other program I had downloaded. I assume that was the culprit.

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Any time you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the web site of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to Mozilla.org.


It’s very sad, but many of the software down-loaders / installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well. You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print. You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does. From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.
