Since yesterday (23/11/13), everytime I open a new tab on my desktop, I get the Bing page instead of the firefox tabbed page.

Tried a system restore, still it is there.

How can I get rid of it?

Resetting your browser won't help since there's a program called Search Protect that protects browser settings from changes. You first need to uninstall Search Protect and related software.

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Hi,

Unfortunately it did not work & the Bing page is still there. This is the url

http://search.conduit.com/?ctid=CT3319612&octid=EB_ORIGINAL_CTID&SearchSource=55&CUI=&UM=2&UP=SP2415AC12-7B2A-446F-9CFC-F6F361CFD6DD&SSPV=

Is bing a part of Microsoft ?

I am going to try to remove it by uninstalling firefox from my computer & then re-installing it again.

You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page.

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

Thanks for your help.

The original Firefox tab page has "reappeared" & the Bing tab has disappeared. Hope it stays this way.

Problem sorted.

This happened to me. I can find About:config / browser.newtab.url and it's value is http://search.conduit.com/?ctid=CT3319612&octid=EB_ORIGINAL_CTID&SearchSource=69&CUI=&SSPV=&Lay=1&UM=2&UP=SP94FE835C-F16E-4851-AE4B-47F1D48E6D1D - that is the Bing search page.

I can't change it. R-click opens a modify dialog but nothing I put in there sticks. Anyway, I've no clue what to put in there.

Any ideas?

AH! The computer has to boot, not just Firefox. Now it does open on a blank page. How do I get it to show recent pages? It uster do that.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

You can check the Windows Control Panel for recently installed programs to see if anything from Conduit or other suspicious software shows up.

I had the same problem, and couldn't change the values for browser.newtab.url on the about:config page. I found a browser hijack program named Search Protect by Conduit. It looks like we aren't actually searching directly with Bing, but going through Conduit to do so. I uninstalled via the Control Panel's Programs option, which worked for me, at least so far. Others have reported difficulty with permanent removal. Microsoft has a few pages of Q&A that may help if you are having difficulty with this particular hijack: [http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/pr.../7b0c62d9-1819-414a-96c8-a512f24b3a5b] . I hope this helps!
