I just downloaded the Nightly test version of Australis, and immediately noticed that the add-on bar had disappeared, and with it about 99% of my extensions. What's the reason in making nearly all add-ons unusable? I'd be glad of any explanation.

Did you try "Restart with Add-ons dissabled..."?

Thank you, but no. I mean that the whole add-on bar in Australis has been deleted by default, which I cannot understand. A few of the add-ons have been moved to the toolbars above, it seems, but for the most part the extensions are just rendered unusable, non-existent, and the reason behind it remains obscure.I'd be glad for any explanation.

That toolbar is no longer present in Australis builds (e.g. Nightly-UX channel).
It looks that the Australis code has landed on the Nightly 28.0a1 branch, but should still be there in Firefox 27.0a2 builds (Aurora channel).

If that Add-on Bar no longer shows as an available toolbar in the toolbar right-click context menu and in View > Toolbars then you have a build where this change has landed.

You can set "Tabs not on top" and have the "Addon bar" and additional toolbars visible and a few other settings in the options/preferences of the extension on the about:addons page.

This allows me to have the PrefBar visible on a new toolbar.

The Classic theme Restorer does not give a true addon bar. I haven't found a way to save it, even. Every time I open my browser I have to reset the "bar" and put the extensions back on it. It won't save. Forecastfox won't go to the 'bar' or show up at all.

Oh, look, There on my addon bar in Comodo.... it's my forecast fox with 3 days and nights. There's my weather radar, my unplug fish, my email notifier, x-notify, my proxy button and my noscript S.. and you say the addon bar is useless and unnecessory anymore.

I prefer no addon bar like chrome.

The Add-on bar was always a choice. Why not give our choice back?

I personally disagree with the decision myself, but complaning on this forum gets you somewhere, which is nowhere.

The Add-on bar (#addon-bar) and status bar (#status-bar) are still present in the DOM in the current Nightly build, but its height is set to 0 (height: 0 !important;), see line 29:

  • chrome://browser/content/browser.css

I'm not sure if that toolbar still works as it is no longer possible to create extra toolbars.

The problem I have experience with this is that the bottom status bar is (or was previously) used to signal to the browser to automatically scroll the page if you were click-dragging to highlight with your mouse.

Now you can only do it from the bottom up, rather than the top down. This not only is quite frustrating on your first attempt(s), but counter intuitive thereafter since most people don't highlight from the bottom of a document up, but rather from the beginning of the text they want to highlight, to the end... the same as we generally read.

I personally don't really miss the status bar, but this particular negative side effect should really be fixed going forward.

The above mentioned Classic Theme Restorer can enable the Add-on bar via the right-click context menu.
You can also open the find bar as a workaround, but that doesn't stay when navigating to a different tab.

Thanks cor-el. The find bar trick works for my click-drag highlighting needs. :) I can live with that as a work around for the time being.

If you find addons that do not work with Australis it may be worth

  • Mentioning them in this thread.
  • Trying to contact the developer or the home/support site of the addon for any information on updates or workarounds.

Note that this was about selecting text with the mouse and automatically scrolling when you are at the bottom of the page to select more on the page.
This only works if you can move the mouse to a position below the current end.
I usually keep the Developer toolbar open (Shift+F2) to make it easy to toggle the Web Console and other developer tools.
