I have a complaint. It seems like every time I do a major update to either Firefox or Windows I have a problem with Jave being recongized on my computer. I look at the instructions and it tells me about the little pop up box that appears and that if that doesn't come up I should be able to see the little red icon on the address bar - but i never do. This is getting very frustrating. The website that happens is http://www.smartsource.com/smartsource/index.jsp?Link=MKRU3JAAR6CCY

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.

Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions. If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.

To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

To avoid confusion:

If I disable JavaScript then I get a page that you need to have JavaScript enabled.
Do you mean that warning?

You can check the javascript.enabled pref on the about:config page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Older versions of Java get blocked every time there is an update, so hopefully updating will solve the problem for you.

I do see a screen flash by indicating that I need to click to activate something, but actually, the Java applet to print coupons runs without that, as long as the main Java plugin (Java Platform SE) is set to Always Activate. (Screen shot)

Edit: To access the Add-ons page, you can use either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

And then in the left column, click Plugins.

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems like when i updated to Windows 8.1 my java was deleted. When I went to check if it was up-to-date java did not appear and when i went to the java site and did the verify versiion it said java was even installed. But java was installed because I have printed stuff from sites in the past week previously to updating Windows with no java problems. Since everything else that i had installed previously was still there I did not even think about java not still being loaded.

Thank you all for for all of your help and suggestions. I really appreciate it.

If Java is installed, but Firefox doesn't find the Java plugin then it is possible that the registry key(s) that Firefox when looking for plugins is no longer present.

You can also check the Security tab in the Java Console to make sure that Java is enabled.
