Just upgraded from version 17 to 20 to find, somehow, Firefox has taken a step backward in how the download window is displayed.

This is the old one: http://limi.net/media/copy_of_Downloadspopulated.png

Look at all that useful information, File name, file size, URL of site, and time/date completed.

Who thought it would be a good idea to take all that info away when "upgrading" to Firefox 20?

Why can't people just do their job right :-s

Soluzione scelta

Note that Firefox 20 also can open the about:downloads page in a tab (see also about:about).

You can set the Boolean pref browser.download.useToolkitUI to true on the about:config page to restore the old download manager window.

I can't agree more.

I used to be able to open the Downloads window as an actual separate window whose progress I could keep an eye on, off to the side, while doing other things in the browser... now it's just some little drop down list that vanishes the minute you do something else.

Why do people insist on their upgrades constantly making their programs less intuitive and with fewer features with each new supposed upgrade?

At the very least, they could provide an option to use the 'old school' download window. If that option exists at all, it's buried somewhere that the average person isn't going to find it.

Ridiculous. Infuriating. Nonsense.

The Download Panel that displays from the arrow button is not meant to be comprehensive. The full list is available in a separate window using the Show All Downloads link or Ctrl+j / Command+j. You can find a complete write-up here: Where to find and manage downloaded files in Firefox.

Not everyone likes it, I totally get that. There is a way to revert back to the old download manager. See: Got new version, want to go back to previous download box.

The Cmd+J window is not a good "full list", it just shows the filename and "re-download" button. So thats a pretty big fail of UI there. To have a window take up twice as much space as before but show a quarter of the info.

Hi marcosdjcm, as best I can tell, you get the re-download button and no size/site information when you opened a file without saving it (in the Open/Save/Cancel dialog). Firefox stored it in a temp folder while it was in use, and then removed it. Any file you actually save should show the same information as the old Download Manager (see attached).

thanks, I followed your previous post and did the about:config tweak to return things to how it was.

Useless programmers. Leave well enough alone. Will they change it back? Getting as bad as microsoft, taking away the users control. What is the point of what they have done? Why when I click 'Show all downloads' does it open a window that has my bookmarks in it?

Hi Kihon,

Why when I click 'Show all downloads' does it open a window that has my bookmarks in it?

Downloads are part of your history, and history and bookmarks share the Library dialog. Under the covers, they are stored together in the same database file. That might not be the handiest way to view downloads, but there is a reason for them being in the Library dialog with the other two.

This is total c***. I just upgraded to version 21 and THERE'S NO OPTION IN about:config TO CHANGE IT BACK! browser.download.useToolkitUI is not even part of the about:config page. So you give us a solution and then remove it? Why didn't you just leave well enough alone 2 iterations ago?

I'm about ready to leap to Chrome for the default browser. Firefox is just getting too buggy and frustrating to deal with.

Hi rosawood, could you check again?

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste toolk and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click browser.download.useToolkitUI (should be near the top of the list) to switch from the new Download Panel to the old Download Manager.

It shows up in my Windows 7 computer but not my XP machine. I finally just removed it on the XP and went back to 19.0.2. I had searched for it in several ways and it simply wasn't there.
