Firefox 12 has become the slowest browser for loading web pages. Is there any solution?

I have been using Firefox as my default browser for years. However, beginning with FF11 and continuing with FF12, it has become so slow to load web pages that it has become virtually unusable. IE, Opera and Chrome are all must faster. If anyone knows a fix, I'd love to hear about it.

I live in rural Texas and admittedly my ISP isn't the fastest "high speed" in the world - 1.5-2.0mbps, but other browsers can handle this OK. Not Firefox.

I've tried disabling ALL add-on's and extensions. I've taken FF down to bare bones - no tabs, no whistles or bells - and still it's painfully slow. I ever replaced my router - no help. I've tried clearing the cache, adjusting settings, even run "Speed Up My Firefox" software. Nothing seems to help.

This is clearly a Firefox issue. I would love to go back to Firefox, but I just don't have the patience to wait while it takes its own good time loading web pages.

Any ideas?

Tom

I've edited this post to delete some questionable information and keep only what I'm sure works for me.

The network.http.keep-alive setting to false seems to provide the biggest improvement, but I think setting network.http..max-connections to 64 may have helped a little in my case, since I have a fairly slow "high speed" connection

I've also re-installed FF12 with these changes, and the issue seems to be resolved.

For now, this seems to have resolved my issues. If things start going downhill, I'll be back.

Thanks to everyone for all the help and suggestions.

hello, make sure that firefox is set up to directly connect to the internet. in firefox > options > advanced > network > connection-settings choose "no proxy". also make sure that firefox or the plugin-container are not blocked by a firewall.

Hi Tom,

Sorry to hear you are having this problem. Hopefully we can sort it out.

I know that you have already tried various options to speed up firefox but have you seen this article and tried the various options? Quick fixes if your Firefox slows down

Also you said that you have tried disabling add-ons etc. But have you tested firefox in Safe Mode? Please let me know if that solves the issue. Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode

Also please ensure that you have the latest version of all plugins (adobe flash etc).

Let me know if none of that helps.

Good luck trying to solve it! Even Firefox people don't know how to fix it yet. We've tried all the suggestions and nothing works to solve it. Even typing Google in Firefox 12 now takes 45 secs to 1 minute just to bring up google, in Firefox 11, it only takes 1 sec. Loading webpages is horribly slow.

I've tried installing Firefox 12 on two new computers at work with no addons, tried safemode, tried to turn off hardware acceleration, set to "no proxy", latest updates to Windows and Graphics driver, running no virus software or no firewall, re-installs of Firefox, complete wipe of computers and re-install of Windows, Firefox, nothing works. We are running no addons and also run in safemode, still same exact slow webpage reads.

This is a problem with Firefox. Going back to Firefox 11 fixes the problems for us at work and home. Some of the computer techs at work have been trying different things in the about:config settings for Firefox 12 but have yet to solve the problem or figure out where the problem is coming from but it takes much longer times to read webpages, it makes fast connect like very slow dial-up!

You will waste a lot of time trying all the suggestions because nothing will work with what has been suggested so far!! I've wasted way too much time at work and home trying to solve the problem myself! We've just went back to Firefox 11 for now to solve the problem. We've also been running Firefox for years and this is the first upgrade that has caused us this kind of problems, so very strange to put out an upgrade that isn't useable!

@a40098, don't know if you gone though it in your efforts to troubleshoot the issue - but please also check if turning off ipv6 support & dns prefetching is making a difference: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Firefox%20cannot%20load%20websites%2... ...

since the OP stated the slowness already occured before the update it may well be a totally different issue than you're facing, so discouraging him/her to take any troubleshooting steps isn't exactly helpful.

If you see a problem where Google takes nearly a minute to load compared with about 1 second in Firefox 11 or on another browser something has gone very badly wrong. I think we can be certain that sort of degradation of behaviour would have been picked up by telemetry and have masses of posts on the forum.

Clearly not everyone sees such problems, but if you would like to solve such a problem you are better starting your own thread by asking a question rather than commenting in someone else's thread.

Thanks for trying to help "madperson", yes we have tried those settings without any luck, although we've been using those setting in previous Firefox versions as well for IPV6 and dns prefetching but I kindly thank you for the help!! I agree that since the poster has had the problem since version 11 that there may be a problem else where and may not be the exact problem we are having, we've just been reading all over the internet to try and research where the problem may be or someone that has solved it that may have the answer but no luck so far. Appreciate the help!!

John99, I have not personally posted the problem myself but others have, the exact problem we are having and we've been following those on other tech forums and mozilla site. I've been very surprised at all the complains I've read with the same problem so since others have already submitted the same problem, I don't see any need to do the same....I'll just keep checking back on theirs to see if they found a solution from time to time. We are continuing with version 11 and will wait to see if it gets fixed in version 12 or 13. It's just too darn slow to stick with it to get any work done, waste too much time or I would use the version 12 and let it report back to mozilla. We aren't the only ones having the slow webpages in Firefox. Something has changed in version 12 that takes it longer to read webpages and we've tried to solve the problem in tech dept with no success yet but one of the guys in that dept said he's still working on it, the others gave up. Thanks.

I have not personally posted the problem myself but others have, the exact problem we are having and we've been following those on other tech forums and mozilla site.

The point is problems tend NOT to be exactly the same, that is why specific single problems are investigated.

  • Firefox has approaching 1/2Billion users
  • Is highly customisable,
  • Runs running on a variety of OS & devices with differing network types and connections..

I admit developers and engineers miss some problems and regressions occur, but often the actual problems relate to use of third party software.

If you have an IT department that can identify a problem then file bug for it. (Large organisations may consider using Firefox ESR instead, but that is a different subject).

If as an ordinary user you have a problem ask on this forum. If necessary we will assist you or even file a bug for you. Hopefully more often we will find a simple solution. Please do NOT post in other similar threads, other than to cross reference posts, unless you have a proposed solution. Although please do read the suggestions, and consider voting as someone with a similar problem.

Firefox developers are working on making firefox work faster and have less memory problems, but we can not have it both ways: either stays the same, or it gets improved. All improvements carry some risk of causing other problems.

It is not recommended that old insecure versions of firefox be used

I personally would recommend that users opt in for submitting telemetry data,
that helps engineers see real performance results about startup times and hangs. A system brought out after some hang causing regressions were missed.

Thank all of you who have posted suggestions and recommendations. I appreciate your assistance. I've tried any new ideas that I had not previously tried, and none worked.

Unfortunately, it appears that this is an issue that even the FireFox folks can't figure out. Therefore, far be it from me to try to analyze what the experts can't. If and when FireFox gets a fix for this problem, then I may come back. Until then, I'll just move on to another browser that works better for my situation.

Again, thanks to all of you.

Just thought I would add first of all that in one recent thread someone reported Firefox 13 beta worked when Firefox 12 was causing problems. Fx13 will be released early next month, but is already available for download and use from the Beta channel.

tlstreig,
Sorry you have had problems and had to stop using Firefox. It does seem from reading your initial post that you have tried the obvious steps. As always in such cases it is that last step that solves the problem, so something vital is apparently being overlooked.

We have good reason to think this problem does not affect many users. If someone is willing to provide full information and try troubleshooting steps we will investigate. That may involve filing a bug for developers to look at, but it need s hard facts and a reproducible situation.

Developers can not work on fuzzy third hand information suggesting that Firefox is slow. I am not saying problems do not exist, just that we are not getting reports that we can easily investigate.

ANYONE ELSE WITH PROBLEMS Read and if you wish vote in this thread. THEN PLEASE if you have problems please start your own thread. I would be especially interested if someone with intractable problems that is able to follow instructions on multiple installs and then installing Firefox 12 and Firefox 11 alongside each other on the same machine and so directly comparing performance.

I agree it is worth trying the beta channel.
It may solve some problems.
It almost always has a downgrade path to a working supported Release (once you have used Beta for a couple of months.)

John99 - Thanks for all the advice and patience. This morning I uninstalled FF12 and installed FF13Beta and made it my default browser. I have checked the box to provide performance feedback, so I hope that will help some. So far, FF13Beta is loading web pages much faster than FF12. That may be a function of the time of day, but at least it's encouraging. I'll follow up after a few days and let you know how things are going.

I would love to be one of your guinea pigs for FF12, but I don't really have the time right now. Hopefully, you'll be able to isolate the problem and fix it. At any rate, I'm going to keep trying with FF since it has been my favorite browser for many years.

Peace.

tlstrieg,
Glad to know things are improving, and thanks for posting the update.

We do realise not many users have the time to troubleshoot problems.

With Firefox 13 there is a new option to reset things, which may solve problems, but there is a possibility that the feature may in future also permanently wipe some data that users would rather not loose. It is good to turn this on as it helps developers get a picture of what happens in the real world of day to day Firefox use.

If in a few days Firerfox is still behaving ok you may wish to mark your own reply above as the solution. Upgrading to the Beta channel may not fix everyone's problem, but this is your thread and your problem, if it works for you it is a solution.

If you use the Beta channel I think the option to submit telemetry data is on by default, whereas with the Release version it is off by default.

Good luck, John

tlstrieg,

I have AdAware's previous version and NO problems. I keep getting notices to UPDATE to versions 10. When I look into the "reviews" on it I find things like this from PC Magazine who did some extensive testing - not just message boards.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2402175,00.asp

These were not the only ones. Note the crashes and blue screen of death???? Looking before you leap is always a good idea with any upgrade or new product purchase. When developers put out a new software upgrade, that means it worked on their computer. That does not mean it will work on everyone elses' due to limited testing. Multiple toolbars and plugins might not be compatible with newer versions on machines that worked fine with older versions. People will beat their heads up against a wall trying to get it to work.

The extra load on the processor and HD with standard page filing slows down the computer and fragments the HD. Even with extra memory, Windows auto page file (memory management) does not always use the extra memory instead of the HD unless you manually change the settings

FF12 might work fine on my computer with 36 process total (Including Firefox and plugin container) and only 5 plugins enabled. That doesn't mean it will work on someone elses' computer with 100 processes running (like on another post) and who knows how many toolbars and other plugins and extensions. If you look at FF12 problems the time that everyone alone spent (wasted) experimenting with little solutions and you're not alone. Luckily 13 is out to give people options as opposed to downgrading.

Notice the FF 13 reviews I post above? The reviews could have been worse instead of better.

Mike,

If users try the beta channel they are contributing to the testing. Some users will merly casually try it and not report attempt to problems that are encountered. Others may get involved in formal testing or at least report problems.

Firefox Releases have now already been tested on the Nightly, Aurora and Beta channels. It is hoped that generally they will work in the majority of setups, but Firefox is highly configurable and multi platform, so it is not surprising problems do occur.

It is rather over simplistic to say.

When developers put out a new software upgrade, that means it worked on their computer. That does not mean it will work on everyone elses' due to limited testing.

I am not sure the link you provide adds anything useful to this subject regarding Firefox speed problems, unless you consider such software to be causing problems; in which case maybe you should start a thread about those problems.

John,

I'm not sure anything you've provided on here has done anything but waste a lot of peoples time screwing around with FF12 wile this message board builds with similar complaints. I don't see where you've really solved any problems with it having people repeatedly mess around. experimenting with something that will not work. FF had their heads up their butts on 12, I'm not sure what parts of the words SCREWED UP you don't understand.

You're worse than a bad car mechanic - can't fix anything, just keep replacing parts until the problem goes away.

I'm out of here and canceling my account. I feel sorry for everyone else on here wasting their time listeing to you.
