I recently migrated all of my files and applications from a 2013 macbook retina pro that had FF 56.0.2 to a 2020 macbook retina pro. The application transferred over with no problems with one exception. I have a blog on livejournal.com and now cannot post or reply to comments on the blog. FF just hangs and freezes. I can't even quit the page unless I quit FF totally and then restart. I can still access livejournal from Safari w/no problems. I checked my extensions (only have two) and disabled hardware acceleration but nothing has helped. Does anyone have any suggestion? I'm not crazy about safari and would like to continue to use FF. Thanks so much for any help!

There is no need to rock the boat. Just run both and log into the new version and watch Sync work it's magic. You can then send your current tabs to the new version after you login, kind of like a backup. see screenshot Keep it simple and run both until you're ready. Our bill will be in the mail.  ;-))

Did you see the warning about the data breach on livejournal? Is there a reason for the old version of Firefox? Did you try in safe mode?

Firefox safe mode: Click the menu button menu , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled…. Firefox will start up with the Firefox Safe Mode dialog.

I did everything you suggested and nada. Not part of a data breach and even starting it in safe mode didn't work. It still works on my original computer, tho.

  • sigh* I supposed in the grand realm of the universe, there isn't but I'm just leery of updating. I've had problems in the past when I've updated to newer versions and had to downgrade back to previous. I supposed I can just continue to use Safari for that site, but it still bugs me as to why the problem is there. The only difference is that the new macbook has Catalina OS (I've seen others who've had problems w/it and Firefox). I jsut don't understand why the program works on the other computer and not on the new one. *sigh*

The sigh was funny, but I'm still not clear on the issue. Are you having issues logging into the site?

The site has a lot going on. see screenshot

You don't have to upgrade, just download to separate folder to test.

I've been doing a lot of sighing today! Anyway, I can log in to the site w/no problem. I can go to my blog and go to my friends' blogs. What I can't do is reply to any comments either on my LJ or others. I write a comment, press send, and FF just hangs and freezes. I have to quit it in order to go to another site or do anything else.

Your screen shot is interesting. I don't know if anything on it could be affecting. I'll have to check that out. Also, Tx for the tip about the upgrade. I'll try that, too.

Ok, so I did what you suggested: downloaded FF to a separate folder and it worked! Thanks so much for your help!

Did you transfer the complete profile or are you still using Firefox 56 ?

Note that best is to update Firefox via "Firefox -> About Firefox" to ensure proper profile migration. You likely will have to update in a few steps, but this is better than installing the current release. Installing the current release directly and using it with a Firefox 56 profile can cause all kind of problems that may not be noticeable at first. --- See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Right now, I'm still using 56 with Legacy Classic Theme Restorer 1.7.0. I downloaded the latest FF version to a folder and opened it from there. So right now I have both on my computer. Haven't done anything else yet. I really like the way I have my version set up and I'm a little leery about changing.
