Start up error message: "Thunderbird is already running...

Hey there Tbird gurus: 

I get this message when I doubleclick the tbird icon to open up my ver 78.4.3.  (Firefox is ver 83).  It was also occurring with the previous version

"Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window."

I hit cancel, and T bird opens. Does this mean it's about to crash?

I've had battery issues on my laptop, so the computer has shutdown suddenly with Tbird open before. Is there some temp file that needs deleting?
