Hello,

I have 7 or 8 sites I regularly use to purchase books. The problem is,I have to type every single one of them and then head to their search bars and type the same book title over and over again. Is there a way I can place all of them in a group and then have Firefox search only within those sites for the book titles?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Stef, that sounds like a good idea. There are "metasearch" sites that search other search engines, but your list of sites sounds like it may be unique to you, so there might not be a ready-made tool to do that.

If you have used the optional short search bar you can add to the toolbar you'll notice it keeps your last search text so you can search the same text on a different site by opening the drop-down and clicking that site. For sites that offer a search engine plugin, this is a convenient "no typing" option. To see whether a site offers one, look for a green "+" button on the magnifying glass in the short search bar while you are on the site. You also can check the Page Actions button (•••) in the address bar. When a site offers a search engine plugin, there will be an item for that at the bottom of the Page Actions menu.

If you can handle typing or pasting the title over and over, another shortcut is keyword bookmarks. You right-click in the site's search form and tell Firefox to add a keyword for the site. Let's say it's Joe's Books so you create the keyword jb for this search. Then you type jb in the address bar, followed by a space, followed by what you want to send to the search form and Firefox submits it directly. This would at least save the step of loading the site first before running your search. More info in this article: How to search IMDB, Wikipedia and more from the address bar.

Otherwise, I think you might need an add-on. I didn't see one in a quick look, but possibly I didn't hit on the right combination of terms.

I did try the option in your third paragraph, but the thing is I have to remember the shortened keywords for each site. Plus, I still have to type the title multiple times and visit each site separately.

Thank you for your answer though!

It's definitely more complicated to get the results out of a site without loading it in a tab. There are web scraping tools developers can use to pull a page from and extract elements out of it in the background, but I don't know if anyone will sign up for that big a project.

You can type '@' symbol in the location bar to trigger a search and select a search engine from the drop-down list. You can add custom search engines to the drop-down list if you assign a keyword that starts with an '@' (@xx) to this keyword bookmark.
