Windows 10 Event 1000, Application Error

more options

Hi, This error notification is generated each time I open Firefox (version 72.0.2 (64-bit)). I have "refreshed " Firefox twice but the issue persists. I'm concerned the plugin-container might be corrupted or damaged. The attached image provides the details about this error. Any comments/suggestions shall be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Miguel, the faulting application plugin-container.exe is used by Firefox to run Flash and other plugins such as Widevine (used for video).

Can you think of any reason for Flash content or videos to be running immediately at startup?

Since plugin-container.exe is not distributed separately, you generally would do this to replace that file:

Clean Reinstall

This takes about 5 minutes. It's not about your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. It's not essential to uninstall Firefox, but you can if you like, saying No to any request about removing personal data.

If you want to make a backup first just in case, see: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox to a convenient location:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

If you have Microsoft Office installed locally, please change your default browser to Internet Explorer temporarily before the next step.

(C) Using File Explorer (hold down the Windows key and press E to launch it), right-click > rename the program folder as follows (you might have one or both):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement at your next startup?

All-right, I followed the steps and, so far, the error message is NOT coming up in Event Viewer. It's worth noting though that my previous installation was under C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox, and this one is under C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox. And my settings, bookmarks, saved passwords, and what-have-you, were preserved. So kudos to you, jscher2000. Thanks!

Ok, this same error came back. Is it related to Adobe Flash?

Yesterday I installed the latest Windows 1909 updates, including Flash. There is a particular Web site I visit daily that requests allowing Flash for a weather animation map. The time stamp of the error in Event Viewer corresponds to when I visited the Weather Bureau site. Could this be it?

Thanks!

Hi Miguel, it could be that site, or other sites where you approve Flash to run. Does Flash actually run on the site eventually or is Flash not working at the moment?

You seem to be using 32-bit Firefox according to the installation folder in the screenshot, is that for a specific reason ?

Hi, sorry for not answering sooner.

Yes, the Flash plug-in does run in this site and in another one that also makes the request. I must say, it takes a bit longer (seconds) to start the animation as compared with the same exact same sites using Chrome, but prefer the fox :-)

It seems the old installation (had it fora few years) was 32-bit, but the re-installed version is 64-bit (see capture attached). Could it be that is pointing to an invalid path? Later on, work permitting, I'll uninstall the plug-in and install it back again.

Much obliged.
