Firefox forces a restart and says it will restore tabs. It does not. Restore previous session option under menu is always grayed out.
Restore option is also grayed out in preferences. There is no way to restore tabs and it lies when it says it will restore them after the forced reboot. It virtually destroys al my work configuring multiple windows on a frequent ( at least monthly) basis. It appears all information about restoring tabs or sessions is obsolete.

You may have corrupt sessionstore [v56] sessionstore.jsonlz4 file(s). Delete all sessionstore* files and the sessionstore-backups folder.
Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.
Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder
Linux: Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Directory. To its right press the button Open Directory.
Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.
Don't delete the files if you need to rescue any data from
them, just move them out of the profile folder to some
location where Firefox doesn't look for them. You can
try to read out their contents using this tool:

There are no sessionstore files in the forefox directory. I have deleted the sessionstore-backups folder.
I'm having the same problem. After going up to version 71 (automatically I might add) I have my tabs gone and my bookmarks gone. These thing are very important to me because I am a web master and programmer. It will take me hours to replicate them. In the about:profile I have one default user. The "Local" and "Roaming" just have whatever I've done (1 1/2 days) since version 71 was installed. In Firefox the "Restore previous version" in the "Menu" isn't there. I haven't backed up anything for Firefox. I have the updated version of Windows 10. Is there anything I can do to the version I was on before version 71 AND get all of my tabs and bookmarks back?

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

How many profiles are listed?
How many should be there?
Also, open the profile folder in your file explorer.
Fred,
I should have backup up my profile from Firefox.
I don't see a "Old Firefox" folder.
I only have one "default user" on my about:profile.
I only have yesterday and today's dates on the files in my profile folder. The contain only what's been done yesterday and today.
Am I sunk?

Make sure you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" - remove checkmark: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"
Thanks Fred and cor-el. I have already decided to create the bookmarks, tabs, and passwords on my own which I am doing now. But thanks anyway. It was nice of you to post in.
