Firefox X11 issues. I am posting for my retired mom who needs to use Flash/Shockwave. Firefox 70 (x11) on Fedora 31 works very poorly.

My retired mother has a need to use Flash/Shockwave. I have installed the Firefox 70 x11 package. When I try to use it, it generates hundreds of errors messages. I realize that Fedora 31 has not been out very long, but this is a fresh install and no tweaking. Browser does come up, but freezes quite often, and even simple things like switching between tabs don't work sometimes. I can't even tell if Flash/Shockwave even works at this point.

Help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

John

What error messages do you see? Are those messages appearing in the terminal window if you start Firefox that way?

Maybe try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server to see whether that version performs better.

Many, many, many errors show up on the terminal. Too many to even try to count.

And I did try the official Mozilla Firefox download. But since it was written to work with Wayland, Adobe Flash (Shockwave) won't work with it, which is what started this whole thing in the first place.

There are messages on fedora.org about this, but pretty much no help of any kind. I spent 90 minutes just trying to find the firefox-x11 version and get it installed. And this version of Firefox is horrendous. There is no way this solution could have been tested, as best I can tell. The regular Firefox works great, except it uses Wayland which does not support Adobe Flash.

Could you try to start a session with Xorg instead of Wayland and see if you still have the same issue. You can find the instructions on the official Fedora documentation (see: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/configuring-xorg-as-default-gnome-session/).

The NPAPI Flash Player Plugin from Adobe certainly works on the official Linux builds of Firefox from mozilla.org/firefox/all/
