Excessive amount of time connecting to gmail.com and in putting a new message in Sent Mail

I have a gmail and a yahoo email account. I have Thunderbird installed on my iMac, OS12.10.6. I use Thunderbird primarily and Apple's Mail rarely. Using Mail both email accounts work with no problems. Using Thunderbird the yahoo account works with no problems but in sending new gmail messages it takes 2 to 5 minutes to connect to the gmail server and/or to put sent mail into the Sent folder. This is a new problem. I've made no recent changes. I have compared all the settings between the gmail and yahoo servers and they are identical. I've dabbled with some settings, to no avail, but I'm not comfortable doing so. I don't know what to do at this point. Please help?
