Firefox keeps on asking for microphone permission.
How many times do I need to Allow? 1000? 10,000? 100,000? You'd think that this browser would wake up and remember what users are inputting. There are few things more aggravating than being asked the same question over and over. It is utterly astounding that so many software designers seem to be unable to comprehend this. I wonder if they are truly living in another dimension. To think that so much of our lives are controlled by these mindless idiots is so sad. No wonder so much of our society is so inefficient. The problem seems to be centered on calling with Gmail. Calling with Google Hangouts seems to be fine. It may be a Flash problem. Probably as Adobe is such a horrible company, being so intrusive and stubborn in so much of their products. I guess Google chose them as a lesser of several evils. The thing is I've gone into Control Panel, Flash Player (though it says its 32 bit and I'm on a 64 bit system) and allowed gmail.com yet it still doesn't make a difference. In Firefox Permissions (hey, how come about:permissions no longer works?) I see Hangouts.google.com is there but Gmail.com is not there even though I've allowed it 100 times. Why would it not be retained? That is probably the problem. And looking at that stupid Permissions page is so aggravating. Such a total design failure. You can Remove All Websites, but you can't ADD ANY WEBSITES. IDIOTS!!!! If I could, Gmail wouldn't ask me every time I laod or refresh the page. Just think: People are actually getting paid, often very well, for moronic work like this. Boggles the mind.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
Never heard of Advanced SystemCare. Just did a new install. The problem may be Gmail. I noticed that when it asks me if it can use the microphone there is no option to check asking it to remember yet that's there on other websites. With Google Chrome there is also no question but you don't need it there - it just remembers your last setting. How logical!
So I'm wondering if someone can try calling with Gmail with the latest Firefox on a Windows 7 machine (maybe the OS doesn't matter). If you get asked for microphone use see if there is an option to remember this setting. Guess I'll just use Hangouts for now though its nice to see more stuff on your account when using Gmail.
In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.
- do not clear the Site Preferences
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history":

- clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
Never use Clear History on Exit. Could someone just try making a call with Gmail and wait for the request for the microphone to pop up and see if there's a remember box to check there? For me its there for Hangouts but not for Gmail. It may be some weird interaction between Firefox and Gmail. Which is strange because otherwise talking on Firefox with Hangouts or Gmail works great. I hate using Chrome just to talk to people. So great to stick with the best browser for everything if possible.

Yeah - hopefully Mozilla will get off their ass and fix this. I'd say with about a billion users worldwide, its mighty important!!!
The whole design of Permission has changed. No longer can I manually add a website. if the website doesn't have the Remember this option checkbox you can't do anything because Mozilla, in their infinite wisdom, elected to give us much less control than before.
On the other hand, I wonder if this is Gmail's fault for not providing that Remember option in that popup box? Who controls that? Google or Mozilla?

That Google support page was Interesting. So maybe this problem is Gmail's fault. I'm probably making a big deal over nothing. Use Hangouts and it works fine. They'll fix it when they fix it.
Another thing they do: When you bring up History as a sidebar and click on one of the links it doesn't open in a new window. It opens on top of where you are! How ridiculous is that? Sidebar lists should ALWAYS open in a new window. Does anybody know how to fix this in about:config?

When I click on an item on the list, it always opens in the same tab, unless I hold the Shift key and then click on it .....
But I may be misconstruing your post (?)
You can try to create a cookie allow exception for https://mail.google.com to see if that has effect.

Thank you for that Shift_Click tip. But my point still stands. Its conventional to have it open in a new tab and really dumb to have it overlap where you are. Their design accomplishes nothing.
The cookie convention sounds promising. How does one do that? And is there another area where Permissions can be set manually like they used to be? I would have thought a logical way is to have a page for General Permissions and another for Permissions for just a specific website. In both they could be set manually, positive or negative. Alas, I should have learned software design.

The problem is with the Hangouts on Gmail? It's an embedded frame on a different host name -- mail.google.com vs. hangouts.google.com -- and it seems Firefox wants you to approve microphone use for cross-site framed pages, even if you already gave permission to both sites, due to concerns about possible deception about which site is recording you. At least, that's my speculation in the following thread:
