all of a sudden most of my e-mails disappeared, and those that remain show in jibberish

Inserita

I was deleting folders under local folders; dozens of them, all empty. Don't know where they came from. Then, suddenly all the folders I actually use disappeared, leaving only inbox and trash. The e-mails remaining display as some sort of code:

right click the folder and select properties and then the repair button. in future place some sort of exception in your anti virus program so it is not trying to scan the profile while it is in use.

By "the folder" I assume you mean the profile (xxx.default). When I right-clicked on it, the only choice I saw was "restore previous version". When I clicked on this, I was given the choice of several previous versions. I picked one. Two choices were offered: restore or open. I tried both options, neither worked.

Another piece of information: I'm getting notices from TBird that it's trying to download messages, but there is a problem: might be a virus, or there is no disk space. I get these slowly. Normally overnight I get ~20 e-mails; today, none. Should I re-install TBird?

I tried Repair Folder (above) and there was no response (after 30 min). The file was mailbox://///RED3/Users/Public/djnicol-mail.sbd/Inbox/ which is empty

have you restarted your device? if not I suggest you do. It sounds to me like you computer or something on it like the anti virus is having a nap and dragging everything else down with it.

I've run out of ideas, so I intend to re-install. Any suggestions on how to save existing data?

I had to delete the Thunderbird folder and start over. No old e-mails, no contacts, no calendar.

The problem began when I noticed a lot of new folders under my Local folders. Many of them were from my folder structure (eg Desktop). Don't know where they came from; they suddenly appeared. Most appeared to be empty, so I started to delete them. Some couldn't be deleted. One must have been critical; when I opened T'Bird the next day, nothing worked. I kept getting messages that e-mails couldn't be opened; either a virus or a full disk. I'm ery unimpressed that a recovery was seemingly not possible.

sounds to me like you may have modified the "local directory" setting in account setting to point to somewhere like the root of C or some other location on the C: drive.

I have no idea why you would be disappointed. I asked a simple question and you replied that you were going to reinstall. I have been doing this much top long to tell folks that reinstalling rarely fixes anything, but is sometime a good way to make things worse. They know that reinstalling and restore points work.

If you deleted the profile folder data, you clearly are not going to be able to recover anything from it.

If you made a copy, or left it exactly where it was and created a new profile perhaps you could.

I just now moved my ...roaming/thunderbird folder to a different location, then retrieved from backup an older version of the folder to its proper location. When I opened Thunderbird, it went through the process of opening a new account, etc but the folders on the left panel were the same as earlier today; inbox contents were similar, sent contents were different, but no address book or calendar.

Before I re-started TB, when reading new e-mails I would double-click on an e-mail and it would open in a new tab, and display that tab. Now when I double-click it opens the e-mail in a new Window. I can right-click and select Open in a new tab, but the focus remains on the original tab. I can't find any way to get back to the old way...any ideas? Thanks in advance.

re : double-click on an e-mail and it would open in a new tab.....when I double-click now it opens the e-mail in a new Window....any way to get back to the old way.

In Thunderbird

  • Menu icon > Options > Display > 'Advanced' tab
  • Open messages in:
  • select 'A new tab'
  • click on OK

This way opens every e-mail in a new tab; I only want an occasional one opened in a new tab.

If you have the Message Pane enabled: A single left click will open in the Message Pane.

To enable the Message Pane: Menu icon > Options > Layout > select 'Message Pane' OR toggle the view using the F8 key

The double click default option can be set and will be used. The setting depends upon what setting you choose in: Menu icon > Options > Display > 'Advanced' tab A double left click will by default use that option. 'A new tab' will open each email in a new tab. 'A new message window' will open each email in a new window. 'An existing window' will open the first email in a new window and each subsequent opened email in the same window overwriting the previous one.

If you set the above options but on occasions want a different option, then you use right click on email and select desired option from drop down menu.

I have that setting to 'An existing window'. A single click on the first message opens that one in the message window. A single click on the next message opens it in the message window, over-writing the previous message. This is how it has always been for me. But double-clicking a message now opens in a new WINDOW, where previously it would open in a new TAB, and leave the focus in the new tab. If I change that setting to 'a new tab', the message is opened in a new tab, but the focus remains in the inbox tab. And EVERY message is opened in a new tab, not just the ones I double-click. What I'm missing is how to set the double-click action.
