I noticed that after a firefox refresh a file called "old firefox" is created. Does this file represent the entire configuration of firefox? if I restored the file to its original location would ff function exactly as before?

I noticed that the add-ons are removed would they also be restored?

Refreshing Firefox {web link} is a LAST RESORT ! !

Refreshing Firefox -- easily fix most problems

If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs. Everything else, like user settings and add-ons, are removed.

Note: Refresh saves your old profile to the desktop in a folder called Old Firefox.

Hi mace2, in the Old Firefox Data folder there is a profile folder. During Refresh, that profile folder's name is removed from Firefox's configuration files (profiles.ini, installs.ini). Copying the profile folder back to its original location is only one step in recovering use of it. The other is to edit the two configuration files to recognize the restored folder. One way to do that -- perhaps the safest way -- is through the Profile Manager, although I don't have the steps handy.

more options

To use the Profile Manager to recover/register a profile, means to click the Choose Folder button and browse to the location of this folder.

See "Profile was moved or renamed":

Note you should never use "Choose Folder" to specify a folder that already contains files and that isn't a Firefox profile folder. Only use "Choose Folder" to recover an profile that isn't listed in the Profile Manager.

Thanks. My goal is to find the difference in operational characteristics to see if I could find the original fault. My first impressions is this is not the way to go.

do you think it can be done using the FF file?

If you tell us what the problem was, we could tell you the possible causes. Did you want to restore the old profile? Or part of it?

more options

Note that if you use the Time Machine or other backup on your Mac that you can possibly restore file(s) from this backup.

As posted above, can you tell us what reason you had to use the refresh feature in Firefox ?

You can use the Profile Manager to create a new profile. If you use the Profile Manager then you can easily revert to the previous profile.

I have noticed a cross script error from noscript when I try to access Office365.

NoScript detected a potential Cross-Site Scripting attack

from https://login.microsoftonline.com to https://portal.office.com.

Suspicious data:

(POST) state=OpenIdConnect.AuthenticationProperties=-UZw8be9oNUfoxbOngtNPCSzcIY_vUx7dEY_AEKEyKbYUVLUXotWJHS96t6tvrUuPOxwurEcV9LC8m3DZLg3-bbfqeruvJtYuEF2uTqaEGMPxOxV9Pp0v7bLgRNDMUDJryR2ydEAn5riNhSPd1A9EZUHp5u77Fp428A0uEdfKis

NoScript reports things like that regularly. Since the POST goes from Microsoft's login site to the Office site, that probably is part of the login process and not something you should block.

Unfortunately the problem is it works after a FF refresh but stops after a period. I am still trying to determine what causes the change and was hoping to compare the configuration of FF after a refresh

What is "it"? Firefox? A particular website?

Are you re-adding the same settings and add-ons after the Refresh?

I believe it is ff because after a refresh I configure FF to manually and the website only recently in the last month doesn't work without the Cross script error being reported by noscript.

Okay so:

"the problem is Firefox works after a FF refresh but stops after a period."

What stops working, a particular website, part of the user interface, etc.?

OK here is an example as I could not get the original problem to occur.

I open a youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVA33KFZhUo&list=PLlHanBMNk-DKQzkktkFKGvJR_9gSRDhBr and then I opened the same youtube video on another tab in the same window (other tabs are open) and it did not work. What happened is the screen populates with all the proper information such as the next video and the description but the video only shows a rotating circle as if the video is expected to play within a few seconds but it never playsit just keeps on rotating. But If I copy the exact URL and open a third tab it works.

It is as if I browsed something in that tab that did not allow it to play. I performed a clear history and the add-ons noscript and ublock are default which allow playing of youtube videos without any interactions. I am still running 68 with a upgrade to 68.1 pending.
